Weekly poll results: the Poco M3 needs positive reviews to become successful

Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:59 PM PST

If last week's poll shows anything, it is that it's better to launch a phone before the shopping holiday, not on. The Poco M3 got a bit over 50% positive vote, which is a strong showing for an affordable phone, though most of those who are interested held off on buying one on Black Friday last week. About 45% of voters want to see reviews before they make a decision. The M3 looks good for the price, but there were questions about the Snapdragon 662 – is it still fast enough? Especially since this phone has a 1080p display (and people did appreciate the higher resolution). The large battery...

Samsung Galaxy M51 in for review

Posted: 05 Dec 2020 07:44 PM PST

If you had to use one word to describe the Samsung Galaxy M51 it's probably going to be the word huge. The budget handset with 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and enormous battery is in our office and we are about to see how good it is. This is one of the few mid-range phones in Samsung's portfolio that's powered by a Qualcomm SoC. The Snapdragon 730G sits behind the wheel paired with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. The best part is that the storage in both cases is 128GB, which is also expandable. Arguably the most notable feature is the humongous 7,000 mAh battery supporting...

Chinese court finds Gionee guilty of planting malware on more than 20 million units

The Chinese court has published a verdict on a case involving the Chinese smartphone maker Gionee. It seems that Gionee planted a Trojan Horse on more than 20 million devices to money from unsolicited ads and other malicious activities without the user's knowledge. The Shenzhen Zhipu Technology Co. Ltd., which is a subsidiary of Gionee, has implanted a Trojan Horse through a software update using the so-called "Story Lock Screen" app. The first devices infected with the "Dark Horse Program" were in December 2018. The job was carried out until October 2019 and for that period, the...

Samsung's 600MP sensor confirmed to be in the pipeline

Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:00 AM PST

According to a tipster, who seems to have really good internal connections over at Samsung, has confirmed that the company is indeed working on a 600MP sensor. And to prove it, he has shared what seems to be a slide from an internal document or presentation. In short, we have a very good reason to believe the report. To our surprise, the slide reveals quite a bit of information - from some key specs to the motivation behind the project. It says that due to the 4K and 8K video recording becoming more mainstream, Samsung wants to solve that with a bigger sensor, which allows for zoomed...
