Moondrop Chu review

Posted: 19 Jun 2022 09:36 PM PDT

The Moondrop Chu is the latest entry-level IEM from the Chinese manufacturer. Moondrop has rapidly become a force to be reckoned with in the world of IEMs thanks to its affordable yet exceptionally well-performing products. The Moondrop Chu is the successor to the Moondrop Spaceship, which we had taken a look at in the past and were generally impressed with, at least as far as the sound was concerned. The Chu comes in at the same $20 price tag, which is nothing in the current IEM landscape, with products going at upwards of 100x that price. But Moondrop has a reputation to uphold,...

Top 10 trending phones of week 24

Posted: 19 Jun 2022 05:22 PM PDT

The biggest moves in our trending chart this week were brought by a couple of rumored phones. Poco's upcoming pair of F4 and X4 GT got their launch dates confirmed and their specs leaked and many of you were keen to learn more about them. Still, they came short of dethroning the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which tops our chart for the second week running. We then have the Poco F4, while the Redmi Note 11 completes the podium. The fourth position goes to the Galaxy A53, followed by the other member of the upcoming Poco pair. This knocks the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max to sixth, while the...

Honor Watch GS 3 review

Posted: 19 Jun 2022 12:22 PM PDT

Introduction Honor's most premium-looking smartwatch to date - the new Honor Watch GS 3 is with us. With its €220/£210 price tag it's not exactly in premium watch territory but it's not an entry-level device either. The key specs include a spacious 1.46-inch AMOLED display, the usual list of health and fitness tracking as well as 4GB of onboard storage alongside a microphone and speaker which means hands-free calls and local media playback are a go. While it lacks third-party app support and smart replies to notifications, Honor Watch GS 3 is rated at up to two weeks of typical use...

Week 24 in review: Nothing phone (1) revealed, Xiaomi 12 Ultra specs leak

Posted: 19 Jun 2022 09:00 AM PDT

Nothing teased its (1) smartphone this week, showing off its design. It sports a transparent back panel that reveals the wireless charging coil and some clever LEDs that light up at intervals. The phone has dual rear cameras, and we know it will be based on a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip, support 45W charging, run Nothing OS, based on Android 12, and launch on July 12. Xiaomi's 12 Ultra got a little clearer this week. It will be among the first smartphones with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. On the front, it will have a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED (its predecessor had a 6.81-inch, non-LTPO). The camera...

Infinix Note 12 VIP hands-on

Posted: 19 Jun 2022 05:39 AM PDT

Introduction It's not every day we get a phone with a VIP right in its name, here at HQ. But in the case of the Infinix Note 12 VIP, it may have been a better fit to just call it Note 120. Or 120+108. Let us explain. The Infinix Note 12 VIP is focused on three things - fast charging, fast screen refresh rate, and camera performance. Charging leverages a 120W beast of a charger that can, on paper, do the 0% to 100% in just 17 minutes. As for the display, the Infinix Note 12 VIP goes all-out with a 6.7-inch 1080x2400px 10-bit AMOLED with 1 billion colors, 700 nits of brightness...

Weekly poll: how much storage do you use on your phone? Are microSD slots still important?

Posted: 19 Jun 2022 02:05 AM PDT

We often see people complaining that a newly announced phone does not have a microSD slot. This week we wanted to find out how many of you will only buy a phone that has a microSD slot and how much storage you use in general. Smartphone storage seems to have hit a wall at 1TB. Quite a few phones released this year have versions with 512GB built-in memory. Most of them are flagships, but there are some mid-rangers too. There are exactly two new phones that can give you both 512GB storage and a microSD slot – the Sony Xperia 1 IV and the Huawei Mate Xs 2. Very few have 1TB and there are none...

Weekly poll results: the Realme GT Neo 3T struggles to attract fans

Posted: 18 Jun 2022 10:33 PM PDT

Last week's poll shows that the Realme GT Neo 3T is not viable at its regular price of €430 (and the temporary €30 discount isn't enough). What went wrong? Well, you can have the same hardware for less money and you don't even need to spend much time looking – Realme's own GT Neo2 is basically the same phone, save for the charging (65W vs. 80W) and camera (the Neo2 actually has a slightly bigger sensor). And it can be yours for €330, €100 less than the 3T. The 3T just felt outdated to some commenters. The Snapdragon 870 is a fine, efficient chipset, but is quite old now and doesn't look...

Flashback: how the Apple M1 evolved out of Apple's iPad chipsets

Posted: 18 Jun 2022 07:04 PM PDT

The first custom Apple chipset, the Apple A4, launched in 2010 with the original iPad and was also featured in the iPhone 4 a few months later. The A4 was manufactured by Samsung and used an enhanced Cortex-A8 CPU core dubbed "Hummingbird". Hummingbird was co-developed by Samsung and Intrinsity and was announced in 2009 as "the world's faster ARM Cortex-A8 processor". Multiple customizations had to be made for the core to hit its 1GHz target. Apple acquired Intrinsity just months after it unveiled the iPad. And a couple of years before that it had acquired PA Semi. After those key...
