Weekly poll: how much storage is enough? Posted: 14 Feb 2021 06:45 AM PST Maybe the iPhone 13 Pro Max will have up to 1 TB of storage. Maybe Android Go edition and its slim apps are good enough to make even 16 GB work. Or maybe there's a golden mean that actually makes the most sense for consumers. It has been a while since we last asked how much storage is enough. Back then, the answer was 64-128 GB. But a lot has changed in the last few years. For one, Google Photos will discontinue the unlimited free storage for all users this June. The search giant previously stopped offering unlimited original quality storage for new Pixels back in 2019. It's not... |
Flashback: micro-USB brought order to charging and data transfer cables Posted: 14 Feb 2021 03:38 AM PST We scoff at micro-USB today, but it was the best connector ever made – at least until USB Type-C, aka USB-C showed up. We're more than ready to wave goodbye to it, but it does deserve a look back at what made it so good. If you don't think micro-USB was ever particularly good, then you don't remember the days of proprietary connectors – you can check out our extinct connectors write-up for the frustrating, incompatible mess that we had to deal with before USB took over. Remember, the U is for "universal". First, let's clear up this "micro" and "Type" business. Originally, USB had a... |
Weekly poll results: people say they want small phones, but that is not apparent in sales numbers Posted: 14 Feb 2021 12:29 AM PST Last week's poll concludes with an interesting result – the size categories are neatly ordered from smallest to largest. And the smallest categories are in the lead by notable margins. Is this the end of the nearly 7" slabs and the rebirth of the mini flagship? Not so fast. This may well be the result of a loud, passionate minority. Early sales data of the iPhone 12 line-up showed that the mini under-performed, it made up only around 6% of the volume. Contrast this with early expectations by analysts, which predicted that mini and Pro Max sales will be about even. The 6% data was... |
Qualcomm stands firmly against Nvidia's acquisition of ARM Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:23 PM PST Back in September last year, Nvidia made a pretty big splash in the tech realm by officially confirming long-standing rumors of a planned acquisition of ARM Ltd. Back then Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang himself sent-out an open letter, laying out massive plans for joint development and efforts between the two entities, mainly focused on AI. It didn't take long, however, for the determined tone of the letter and the announcement for the proposed $40 billion deal to get softened quite a bit after the realities surrounding it became clear. Namely, that it would have to be thoroughly investigated and... |

ByteDance is reportedly negotiating a sale of Indian TikTok assets Posted: 13 Feb 2021 02:00 PM PST In an interesting new development in the increasingly-complicated and geopolitical/economic situation between India and China, ByteDance is reportedly now looking to sell-off its Indian TikTok assets to local rival and unicorn Glance. The report comes from Bloomberg and concerns recently-initiated high-level and still secret talks. We'll try our best to simplify thigs as much as possible here. After India made its ban of 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok within the country permanent this January, ByteDance - the Chinese parent company for the short video sharing platform... |
