Posted: 23 Nov 2020 08:44 AM PST

With the Mate 40 flagships out of the gate, Huawei is moving its attention to the P-series – despite US sanctions disrupting its supply line, the company is on track to launch the P50 phones in the first half of 2021. This means the P-series may keep to its usual March/April launch time frame (or stick close to it, anyway). The Elec reports that Samsung Display and LG Display are ready to supply OLED panels for the new models, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter. Samsung Display acquired a license to trade with Huawei back in October and it seems that LG did so as...

The Honor V40 will not use the Kirin 9000, Dimensity 1000+ the likely replacement

Posted: 23 Nov 2020 06:16 AM PST

Huawei will sell the Honor division and this is more than just a legal shuffle – it will affect the end product too. Leakster Digital Chat Station writes that the Honor V40 series will not use the Kirin 9000. The Honor V30 and V30 Pro used the Kirin 990 chipset, HiSilicon's top chip of 2019 (well, 'chips', really, as the Pro used the slightly more advanced 990 5G chip). If all was well, the V40s would have used HiSilicon's 2020 flagship chipset. However, the company has trouble sourcing those chips as the US/China trade war has blocked TSMC from fabbing chips for Huawei. It did produce...

Flashback: Nokia N97 was an "iPhone killer" that helped kill Nokia instead

Posted: 22 Nov 2020 12:12 PM PST

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was the first Symbian S60 phone with a touchscreen released by the Finnish company. It wasn't a great phone by any means, but an aggressive price and a generous retail package pushed it along to 8 million sales in its first year, a decent success. But if the 5800 wasn't perfect, the Nokia N97, which was supposed to be the company's top phone in the fight against the iPhone, was an outright disappointment. Don't take our word for it, here's what Anssi Vanjoki, Executive VP of Markets at Nokia, had to say about it. "The N97 has been a tremendous success for us when...
