Posted: 05 Oct 2020 07:29 AM PDT

Huawei officially confirmed that some of the phones running EMUI 11 will be able to install HarmonyOS 2.0. The new version of the in-house operating system is being rolled out to developers in stages, the first beta for phones is expected this December. A poster on Weibo claims to have seen the schedule and it goes like this – phones with the Kirin 9000 will get it first (those would be the Mate 40 series), then phones with Kirin 990 5G (some P40 and Mate 30 models) and so on. Even rather old phones powered by the Kirin 710 and 810 will get to join in (after quite a wait). The "partial"...

Cricket Wireless offers 5G connectivity on top of AT&T's network, but currently it sells only one 5G capable phone. Soon it will add the LG K92 5G to its roster, the first model in the K90 series. It features a quad camera and a quad LED flash, both arranged in squares on the back. Notice that only one of the cameras sticks, the other three are flush. Anyway, the front-facing camera is mounted inside a centered punch and there's a side-mounted fingerprint reader plus a Google Assistant key. Galaxy Note20 Ultra's camera sees little love in DxOMark review

Posted: 05 Oct 2020 05:51 AM PDT

The latest smartphone to get tested by the team over at DxOMark is the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra and it managed to put up a combined score of 121. This places it at the tenth position in the overall smartphone photography ranking and a single point behind the Galaxy S20 Ultra. While its camera setup is versatile, there are some evident pitfalls including inconsistent zoom, visible noise in low light scenarios as well as some autofocus hiccups. The hardware on the Note20 Ultra is pretty familiar with a main 1/1.33-inch, 108 MP-resolution sensor which outputs 12MP shots just like...

Posted: 05 Oct 2020 04:12 AM PDT

Last week Google stated that it will start enforcing the rule which requires in-app purchases to use the Google Play billing system (which carries a 30% service fee). This was set to go into effect on September 30 2021, but now the company has announced that for India at least this will be pushed back to April 2022. Google's VP of product management Sameer Samat said "It's not good for anyone if our partners feel they can't grow and be successful. So we're deeply committed to the Indian ecosystem. We will be engaging, we will be finding ways (so) that we can grow together." This delay...

The Oppo A73 is a rebranded variant of the Oppo F17, which went on sale in India in September. But if you dig a bit in our database you'll find an Oppo A73 from 2017, which was a localized variant of the Oppo F5 Youth, both of which have no bearing on the Oppo A73 from today. The Oppo A73 for Tunisia packs a 6.44-inch Super AMOLED of 1080x2400px resolution, with an embedded optical fingerprint scanner and a teardrop notch for the 16MP selfie camera. Some of the launches you've certainly followed, but here's the recap in case you've missed any. Xiaomi gave us the Mi 10T lineup, which consists of a Pro, vanilla and Lite versions. The first two only differ by their primary camera (108MP vs 64MP) and storage, while the Lite cuts a bunch more corners to achieve what is certainly a very attractive price. Then it was Google's turn to introduce its Fall lineup with the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5. There were hardly any surprises left...

Redmi Smart Band review

Posted: 04 Oct 2020 06:22 PM PDT

The Redmi Smart Band is the most affordable fitness tracker in Xiaomi's lineup. It makes a few compromises in terms of design and functionality but still offers a color touchscreen LCD, heart rate monitor, water-resistance, and customizable watch faces. The design of the Redmi Smart Band is extremely basic. The band has two matte silicone straps attached to the squared-off main module. Despite the blocky body, the band wraps around fairly well around your wrist with only some gap between your arm and the joints of the straps. The appearance of the band is rather pedestrian,...

Huawei MateBook 14 2020 AMD review

Posted: 04 Oct 2020 12:34 PM PDT

Introduction Huawei has a quickly growing lineup of laptops that span its own brand as well as its sister brand Honor. Covering sizes from 13 to 16 inches, most of those laptops have 16:9 screens with the exception of the 3:2 aspect MateBook X and X Pro, and the star of this review - the MateBook 14 2020 AMD. You could have had a Huawei MateBook 14 2020 with a 10th gen quad-core Intel Core-i5 or Core-i7 for a while now, but the unit we have here is the new Ryzen-powered model, which is decidedly more exciting. The choice is between a six-core Ryzen 5 4600H, which we saw on the...

Top 10 trending phones of week 40

Posted: 04 Oct 2020 09:29 AM PDT

A couple of major events took place this week and unsurprisingly our trending chart felt the effect. The Pixel 5 emerged on top, while the Xiaomi Mi 10T and 10T Lite make up the other two podium positions in that order. Surprisingly enough, the 10T Pro didn't even crack the top 10. In fourth we have the iPhone 12 Pro Max, as you guys are clearly hotly anticipating its official debut. Two more upcoming phones follow - the Samsung Galaxy A72 and Poco C3 with the last one clearly picking up speed ahead of its launch next week. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is shaping like a new crowd...
