Weekly poll: are the Asus Zenfone 7 and 7 Pro sleeper hits?

Posted: 30 Aug 2020 05:13 AM PDT

The Asus Zenfone 7 Pro is a significant improvement over the previous generation. The Zenfone 6 from last year was pretty capable too, but it had issues translating that into sales. Can the new generation do better? Let's start with the roomy 6.67" AMOLED display from Samsung with 90 Hz refresh rate, high brightness and excellent color accuracy. It only has 1080p resolution, though, while most premium models have moved to 1440p. Except gaming phones, but this isn't a gaming phone. Unblemished 90 Hz AMOLED display with HDR10+ • Thanks to the flip-up camera It could be, as it has...

Flashback: the Oppo N1 turned the camera around on you

Posted: 30 Aug 2020 01:11 AM PDT

Not long after phones first learned how to take photos came the first phones with dedicated selfie cameras. But the arrival of 3G networks meant that not just any camera would do – a core feature of 3G was the native video calls. Barely anyone did that, but we got some interesting phones out of it. Like the Sony Ericsson V800, for instance, which had a camera that normally pointed away from you to take photos, but could be rotated to point towards you too. Back then you had to rotate it manually, that was the norm. And it remained so until the Oppo N1 arrived. The phone is notable for...

Weekly poll results: under-display cameras are exciting, never mind potential downsides

Posted: 29 Aug 2020 08:14 PM PDT

Last week's poll shows that the image quality of selfies is not a priority – instead most people prefer a sleek-looking, waterproof phone. 75% of voters were in favor of under-display cameras while only 25% preferred the flip-up design. Durability really proved to be a key concern, beyond just water resistance. Many are still not convinced that the flip-up mechanism will last the lifetime of the phone. Also, the mechanism does take up a lot more volume. Asus claims the Zenfone 7 motor has more than double the torque of last year's model and that the flip up can withstand 35 kg pushing...

Here’s a more detailed look at the upcoming Sony Xperia 5 II in Black and Grey

Posted: 29 Aug 2020 04:00 PM PDT

In case you missed it, Sony already confirmed that the Xperia 5 II is going to be made official on September 17. A specs leak and a promo video later, there is now very little mystery left surrounding the smartphone. Still, here are a couple of extra, very detailed images of the incoming compact flagship, courtesy of Evan Blass. Sony Xperia 5 II: Black • Grey These show the Xperia 5 II in Black and Grey, with another earlier leaked render, already showcasing the device in Blue. Sony's continued insistence on an odd naming scheme aside, there is quite a lot for prospective...

Nokia is working on Power Earbuds Lite

Posted: 29 Aug 2020 02:00 PM PDT

If the original Nokia Power Earbuds BH-605 flew below your radar, we recommend giving our review a quick read. These turned out to be a hidden gem, offering great audio quality and an amazing battery life. If you can live with the slightly bigger and heavier design, there really isn't much else to want out of the €90 MSPR buds. Well, apparently a Lite version is nearly ready for prime time, as evidenced by a grainy photo and a Bluetooth SIG certification document. Going by the BH-405 model number, we don't really know what the Power Earbuds Lite have skipped-on to get that "lite"...

Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro images, features and certification leak

Posted: 29 Aug 2020 12:00 PM PDT

We already know that Huawei is working on at least one new smart wearable – the Watch Fit. A new and rather bountiful leak now adds a Watch GT 2 Pro to the list, as well. Like the name suggests, this is not an entirely new device, like the rectangular Fit, but rather an upgrade, or next iteration of the company's flagship GT line of wearables. There is a lot to note here, so, in no particular order, we start with the fact that, apparently, the Watch GT 2 Pro will come in at least a Classic and a Sport variant. With Nebula Gray and Night Black as a pair from what will likely be a...

Nokia 3.4 renders and specs leak

Posted: 29 Aug 2020 09:30 AM PDT

HMD Global's participation in IFA 2020 is already quite certain, along with info that the company will be unveiling a slew of new budget to mid-range devices at the show. The Nokia 3.4, codenamed "Doctor Strange", will likely be among these, alongside the Nokia 2.4, known as "Wolverine". Having stopped by GeekBench already, the Nokia 3.4 is clearly out there, in industry-insider circles. That's how today's leak came into existence, with a tipster claiming to have the unit or, at least, actual pictures of it, which can not be released. Enter what is essentially a "fan made" render of the...
