Finally, the app will appear on the Dock where all multitasking-supporting apps are listed and can be used alongside Google Photos or Google Calendar. Multitasking on iPad is extremely useful since it comes with a native drag-and-drop feature for texts or images. Google said in a short message that the app should already work both for G Suite customers and end-users with personal accounts, but they must make sure they have the latest version. It also urged customers to... |

| Huawei patents clamshell foldable phone Posted: 07 Jul 2020 05:40 AM PDT We've only seen a few commercially available foldable phones and only two of them come in the clamshell form factor - the Galaxy Z Flip and Razr 2019. It seems that the third major player in the foldable game Huawei will also have a go at that form factor. A patent on CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) reveals the key design features of the Huawei clamshell but keep in mind that not all patents actually make their way to the production line. Starting with the front of the clamshell Huawei we can see it sports a sizeable notch on the top which houses the selfie... |
| Microsoft buys Movial to boost Android OS development for Surface Duo Posted: 07 Jul 2020 04:51 AM PDT Ever since Microsoft started the development of its Surface Duo device, the company has been relying on a third-party firm that handles the Android software development and the company is called Movial. It has offices in Romania, Taiwan and the US and now Microsoft is acquiring the company so it can move the development in-house. People familiar with the matter say that Movial has already finished the development of the Android OS for Surface Duo and Microsoft is buying the firm so it can continue to provide software support for the smartphone after launch. Following the... |
| TikTok to pull out from Hong Kong Posted: 07 Jul 2020 04:04 AM PDT Popular video-sharing app TikTok will pull out from the Hong Kong market within days, reports Reuters citing a company spokesperson. This decision to exit Hong Kong comes after the Chinese government passed its controversial security law in the semi-autonomous city in a bid to exert more control over its Internet, impose censorship, and force companies operating in the region to hand over user data. TikTok is owned by China-based ByteDance, but the company says its user data isn't stored in China - something they told the Indian government recently following a ban along with 58... |
| Kuo: Apple's AirPods 3 will adopt AirPods Pro's SiP technology Posted: 07 Jul 2020 03:18 AM PDT The next-generation AirPods are expected to be released sometime in 2021 and according to Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned Apple analyst, the pair will adopt the more advanced SiP technology instead of the current SMT tech. For the record, SiP stands for system-in-package chip solution while SMP means surface mount technology. SiP allows for more components to be crammed inside smaller space, similar to the AirPods Pro. The current design of the AirPods Pro uses SiP and the custom H1 chip is handling noise-canceling, Siri commands, connectivity, etc. It's still unclear what exactly that... |
| Oppo contributes to first 5G SA network deployment in the United Kingdom Posted: 07 Jul 2020 02:29 AM PDT The 5G network in the United Kingdom keeps expanding, and today Oppo announced the first successfully deployed 5G standalone network. In a controlled environment at the Coventry University, two Oppo smartphones were tested on Vodafone's network, built with Ericsson equipment on several tasks, part of the so-called "slice switching software solutions". The devices were a Find X2 Pro with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset and a Reno3 5G, coming with a Mediatek Dimensity 1000L platform. The solution, offered by Oppo, allows each sliced network to work independently with its own resources... |

| Facebook Messenger shows early signs of cross-chat support with WhatsApp Posted: 06 Jul 2020 09:03 PM PDT We know that Facebook eventually plans to integrate WhatsApp into Facebook's other apps. As reported by WABetaInfo, reverse engineer @Alex193a has discovered evidence of this in the latest version of Facebook Messenger. The list below shows the mentions of "whats_app" references. This could be a pre-cursor to the long process that it will be to integrate Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp users. The main difference between both messaging platforms is that WhatsApp stores chat information on-device in addition to end-to-end encryption (along with the ad-free experience). This is why WhatsApp... |
| Huawei Mate V might be on the way, folding inwards Posted: 06 Jul 2020 07:11 PM PDT Huawei and Samsung have so far diverged on what the best design would be for a phone that can turn into a tablet through the magic of folding screens. While Samsung's Galaxy Fold folds inwards, Huawei's Mate X and Mate Xs both fold outwards. While Samsung has been rumored to stick with its previous design for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 2, and improve upon the formula, Huawei may just give up on its unique path and actually join Samsung in the inward-folding realm for the next device. This has been referred to in rumors as Mate X2, but Huawei has recently filed for a new trademark in... |
| Google's Pixels and Samsung's S20 family get July security patches Posted: 06 Jul 2020 05:04 PM PDT It may not be July 1st, but today is the first Monday of the month, and that means one thing: Google is ready to send out a new batch of monthly security patches to its still supported Pixels. This time around there's no feature drop like last month, so all you're getting are security fixes - but hey, those are important too, so your phone isn't exposed to nasty vulnerabilities. As usual with Google rollouts, it may be a few days (or even weeks) before all supported Pixel units out there get the update, but it is finally on the way. The build number for all devices is... |

The renders below are based off of CAD schematics and show what Google's upcoming compact Pixel 5 could look like. From the rear the Pixel 5 looks very much like the Google Pixel 4 with a dual camera setup, however the Pixel 5 also has a capacitive fingerprint scanner - something the Pixel 4 dropped in favor of face recognition. The front of the Pixel 5 features a single selfie camera, embedded into the display via a punch hole. Based on the CAD data, the Pixel 5 will measure 144.6x70.4x8mm - slightly shorter... |

We're expecting the Note20 duo, Galaxy Z Flip 5G and the successor to the Galaxy Fold. We now get to know the name of the flagship foldable - the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Galaxy Z Fold 2 design renders This name change would unite the upcoming foldable with the brand's other folding phones - the Z Flip under one series. | Versatile Video Codec (H.266) finalized, will produce 50% smaller files than HEVC (H.265) Posted: 06 Jul 2020 12:06 PM PDT After several years of research, Fraunhofer HHI has announced that the Versatile Video Codec (H.266/VVC) standard has been finilized. This was done with the help of several high profile partners: Apple, Ericsson, Intel, Huawei, Microsoft, Qualcomm and Sony. H.266 promises to cut file sizes in half (same for bandwidth requirements for streaming) while maintaining the same visual quality as H.265/HEVC. That's a massive improvement – keep in mind that something like 80% of all Internet traffic is streaming video. The new codec can handle anything from SD to 8K as well as 360° videos, all... |
