Week 26 in review: iOS 14 and Realme X3 official, OnePlus Nord/Z teasing begins

Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:48 AM PDT

This week Apple kicked off its online-only WWDC by detailing the new iOS 14, iPadOS, tvOS, WatchOS and macOS Big Sur. Apple's iPhone will get home screen widgets, an app drawer of sorts, called App Library, picture-in-picture and new smaller versions of apps, called App Clips, and much more this fall. Apple also promised to show its first ARM-based Macs by the end of the year, though it said it isn't going to stop working with Intel. We also saw dummies of Apple's rumored iPhone 12 trio. The new design is flat and squarish, reminiscent of the iPhone 5 and 5s of old. The rear has a...

Flashback: the iPhone SE was a true mini-flagship and it is still relevant today

Posted: 28 Jun 2020 05:27 AM PDT

Last week we reminisced about the smallest Android, this week we will look at the iOS side of things. The original Apple iPhone SE was not the smallest iPhone ever, but it was the smallest in recent memory - more importantly, the smallest that is still current. Apple announced that all of its phones that are running iOS 13 now will be able to update to iOS 14 by the end of the year. This includes the SE (which made its debut with iOS 9), but not the older 5s, on which the design was based. Not bad for a phone that came out over four years ago (March 2016). The design actually dates...

Weekly poll: Is iOS 14 a worthy upgrade? Can it make you switch?

Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:11 AM PDT

iOS 14 is coming to millions of devices - everything from the iPhone 6s and older (including the original SE) - and it will improve all of those phones. Even better, the new features it brings may prove to be just what was needed for some Android users to make the jump. The new version received some admittedly Android-like features, but also added stuff that Android should copy. We've written about iOS 14 at length, so we'll just go over the highlights quickly before pointing you to the polling station. Widgets are finally treated as first-class citizens - having them on the lock screen...

Weekly poll results: HTC U20 5G can be popular if the price is right, Desire 20 Pro gets snubbed

Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:02 PM PDT

Last week's poll shows that the HTC brand still lingers in people's minds - the HTC U20 5G can receive a very warm welcome under one condition. The price has to be right, people are no longer willing to pay a premium for an HTC phone like they did in the golden days. The company is yet to put a price tag on the U20, but if it gets it right then there are plenty of people willing to give HTC another shot. There's a small contingent willing to buy even at a higher price, not many but still more than the people who voted for the alternative phones. The Snapdragon 765G chipset and...

The field of truly wireless headphones has become our second calling after smartphone companies all embraced the latest accessory. The latest addition in our office is a pair of Amazfit Powerbuds - truly wireless earbuds with a heart-rate sensor. These are the first TWS earphones by Amazfit, a Xiaomi-owned company specializing in smart wearables. The Amazfit Powerbuds ship in three colors - Black, White, and Yellow, with the last one having some neon accents. We received the Black ones, which have neat red details that bring a bit of life to the otherwise understated matte paint...

Microsoft Surface Duo to have an 'app group' feature to help with multitasking

Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:20 AM PDT

The Microsoft Surface Duo was announced all the way back in last Fall with a time frame for release around this year's holiday season. Recent rumors point to Microsoft shooting to beat that deadline by as much as several months and judging by how often we're hearing the Surface Duo mentioned in the past weeks this could indeed be the case. The latest bit of info concerns a software feature of the Surface Duo and it's one to do with making better use of the two displays - that's what the Duo is all about after all. It'll be called something along the lines of 'app groups' (why not 'duet',...
