Weekly poll: Redmi 9 does more than the Redmi 8, but costs more too - is it worth it? Posted: 14 Jun 2020 06:19 AM PDT The Redmi phones - not Redmi Note, not Redmi K, just the base series - is the baseline for Xiaomi phones, a distillation of the most important features wrapped up in an affordable package. By their affordable nature, they move slightly behind the times, but the Redmi 9 is still a major upgrade over what came before it. For starters, the screen now has 1080p+ resolution, no more slumming it with 720p+. Also, the diagonal was adjusted to 6.53" (up from 6.22") to make better use of the higher pixel count. Powerful chipsets have proven their ability to draw in potential buyers, so the...
Flashback: the Samsung Jet was a feature phone that made smartphones of the day tremble Posted: 14 Jun 2020 03:01 AM PDT You probably have an image in your head of what a feature phone looks like - a small non-touch display and a keypad below it. And that is exactly what they are for the most part, but there are a few rare devices that shatter such expectations. The Samsung S8000 Jet from 2009 is one of the prime examples. Its 3.1" AMOLED display covered most of the front and the multitasking OS with TouchWiz styling had you questioning where the line is between smart and feature phones. Size comparison: Apple iPhone 3GS, LG KM900 Arena vs Samsung S8000 Jet and Samsung S5630 This wasn't a...
Weekly poll results: vivo X50 Pro+ wins over the fans as it didn't underestimate the chipset Posted: 13 Jun 2020 10:43 PM PDT Last week's poll is a good example of the appeal that cutting-edge flagships have. The vivo X50 Pro+ won hands-down - being the only one with a flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 865, certainly made a big difference. The 120Hz refresh rate certainly helped as well. And let's not forget that the plus model is the first phone to use the Samsung ISOCELL GN1 - a large 1/1.3" sensor that's optimized for low-light shooting. It has a native pixel size of 1.2µm, which grows to 2.4µm thanks to the Tetracell technology (i.e. the Quad Bayer filter). The vivo X50 Pro suffered a surprising defeat -...
Posted: 13 Jun 2020 07:12 PM PDT Xiaomi's made its name by offering great hardware at aggressive prices. The latest example is the recently launched Redmi 9 which was introduced this week with a 150 starting price. It brings an FHD+ display, beefier chipset and adds two extra usable cameras compared to the Redmi 8 but it's too early to crown it as the champion of the entry-level segment. Blurring the line between entry level and midranger Of course the key thing about the Redmi 9 is its price. The 3GB RAM and 32GB storage base unit costs just 149, while the 4/64GB units go for 179. For that price, you're...
The OnePlus 8T phones might come with 65W Super Warp Charging Posted: 13 Jun 2020 03:00 PM PDT OnePlus phones come with an Engineering Mode app, which is used for troubleshooting and testing certain components and features. Deep within the source code of the app in the Android 11 beta, XDA-Developers found some interesting things about OnePlus' future devices. First off, the app mentions something about a Super Warp Charge fast charging solution pushing 65W into the handset. This could mean that the OnePlus 8T-series might get it. But this is hardly a surprise since the company shares tech with Oppo and Realme and we've already seen the tech in the form of SuperVOOC 2.0 on Oppo...
Redmi 9 may get more RAM and storage in China Posted: 13 Jun 2020 01:00 PM PDT A few days ago Redmi unveiled the Redmi 9 with Helio G80 SoC and quad rear cameras. The Redmi 9 comes in 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB memory configurations and it's yet to debut in China, but whenever it does, it will likely come with a third variant having 6GB RAM and 128GB storage which is listed on Chinese certifying authority TENAA's website. The Redmi 9 sports a 6.53" LCD of FullHD+ resolution, which has a notch up top for the 8MP front camera. The back of the smartphone having a textured finish houses a quad camera setup, which is a combination of 13MP main, 8MP ultrawide, 5MP macro and...
More details about Google's Android TV dongle codenamed "Sabrina" surface Posted: 13 Jun 2020 11:00 AM PDT XDA-Developers dug up some precious info on the upcoming Chromecast or Android TV stick, whatever you like to call it. We now know what to expect in terms of hardware and features. The guys over at XDA obtained a pre-release version of the firmware, which revealed some specs. The device will run on Amlogic S905X2 chipset with 2GB of RAM. It will support 4K streaming in 60 fps and, of course, HDR and Dolby Vision standards are also on the list of supported features. Interestingly, there's a mention of an auto low-latency working over HDMI 2.1. This might be related to Google Stadia...
