The storied Japanese manufacturer managed to ship just 400,000 smartphones during this timeframe, its lowest figure in recent memory. Q1 shipments in particular are down by 64% compared to the same period last year, marking the largest dip in this category. The last time the company saw positive yearly growth from its Xperia line was back in Q2 2017. It will start at $1,100 - that's the launch price of the Galaxy S20+ 4G. And this will be a 4G phone as well to keep costs down. The three giants will offer relevant patents under FRAND terms. EVC has a royalty-free base version as well as various optional enhancements (which will cost money to license, but can be disabled individually). The standard promises higher compression and greater efficiency for 4K videos and will help bring wider distribution to 8K, VR and AR content. Currently, EVC can match the video quality of the older H.264 while file...

Posted: 12 May 2020 11:52 PM PDT

The vivo X30 family arrived last year with an Exynos 980 chipset, becoming the first phones with an integrated 5G modem. Now, a device called vivo Y70s 5G appeared on Geekbench with a SoC named Exynos 880 - this is likely a straightforward midrange device, aiming to set the price for a next-gen phone even lower. In the same time the phone, rumored to have the model code V2002A, appeared on 3C with an 18W charger, which isn't as fast as the vivo FlashCharge at 22.5W, but is still better than most midrangers out there. vivo Y70s 5G (V2002A) on Geekbench The phone was joined on...

Samsung offers a closer look at how the brushes help keep dust out of the hinge

Posted: 12 May 2020 10:02 PM PDT

On early Wednesday, Samsung released a piece that looks deeper into the Galaxy Z Flip's Hideaway Hinge. This is the second of two parts (so far) where Samsung explains how bristles are used in the hinge to keep foreign debris out of the hinge assembly. Between the hinge's bumper and the two halves of the phone is a very narrow gap of about 1mm. The Samsung Galaxy Fold saw drastic failure to the display whenever dust or debris managed to lodge itself into the hinge, which is why Samsung put those plastic stoppers at the two ends along the folding part for the redesigned Fold. This alone,...

Motorola Edge+ Android phones tend to have relatively shorter product cycles compared to iPhones,...

Samsung Galaxy Note20's display to be capped at 60Hz refresh rate, only Note20+ gets 120Hz

Posted: 12 May 2020 05:39 PM PDT

Yesterday a rumor told us that both the upcoming Galaxy Note20 and the Note20+ would feature screens with 120Hz refresh rate, which makes sense considering that's also a feature of the S20 line. However, today the same source has come back with some new information, and it's not good for fans of cheaper Samsung flagships and high refresh rate panels. According to the same Ross Young, founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, the Note20 will miss out on the high refresh rate train, coming with a display that will only be capable of refreshing 60 times per second. The Note20+, on...

Chinese market resurges in April, 5G phones account for nearly 40%

Posted: 12 May 2020 02:49 PM PDT

The Chinese smartphone market rebounded in April, as per government figures. A total of 40.8 million phones were shipped, which is a 14% increase over April 2019. Out of those, 16 million or nearly 40% were 5G phones. That wasn't enough to offset the COVID-19 effect since as a whole shipments in the months January through April have decreased 20%, compared to the same period in 2019. But April was the first month in which growth in shipments was recorded, which is a good sign going forward. Sadly the official numbers no longer quote Android-only numbers, so it's not possible to...

All three devices appeared on Realme's official support page but have since been removed. About a month ago, the remote control for Realme's smart TV stopped by Bluetooth SIG, while the Realme X3 SuperZoom was recently teased by the company's CEO. The X3 lineup will likely be a hardware refresh with enhanced camera capabilities, hence the SuperZoom name. We won't be surprised if...

The Nokia 9.3 PureView will record 8K video and have exclusive ZEISS effects

Posted: 12 May 2020 12:15 PM PDT

HMD is taking the time to get the Nokia 9.3 PureView right and a lot of effort is going into the camera. We already heard that it will use a 108MP sensor, now sources are claiming that the camera may record 8K video at 30fps, reports Nokia Power User. This is only if the engineers are happy with the results, of course, so they are reportedly hard at work, trying to finalize the image processing algorithms. Part of what makes 8K possible in the first place is the Snapdragon 865 chipset, which replaced the S855 that the phone was going to use initially (this phone has been delayed several...

Posted: 12 May 2020 11:12 AM PDT

The Redmi 9 - M2004J19G - has surfaced again, this time it was the FCC that released certification data and along with it some salient details about the upcoming phone. It will launch with MIUI 11, if that was ever in question, which likely means Android 10 out of the box. The phone will be powered by a 5,000mAh battery. Unfortunately, there's no info on the charger - there was some speculation that it will be 10W, a downgrade from the 18W charger the previous model used. Some may not like it, but the new Redmi 9 will be larger than its predecessor - the dimensions seem to confirm...
