Weekly poll: LG Velvet is rugged and has a stylus, but does it have a future? Posted: 10 May 2020 05:04 AM PDT LG is trying to reinvent its image and introduced a new smartphone line-up, debuting with the LG Velvet. It's an odd phone, at KRW 900,000 ($735/680) it's too pricey to be a mid-ranger, but that Snapdragon 765G chipset doesn't make it a flagship either. Still, the phone has a few unique features to make it stand out from the S765 rabble. It is both IP68 and MIL-STD 810G certified in the finest tradition of the V-series. Most of its competition settles for just the dust and water resistance of IP68 without the drop resistance of MIL-STD. The other is the support for a Wacom stylus -...
Weekly poll results: Xiaomi's Mi Note 10 Lite and Redmi Note 9 Pro get a warm welcome Posted: 10 May 2020 01:09 AM PDT The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite attracted a lot of interest in last week's poll - the sentiment is positive, though some wish the price was lower. As it stands, it's quite close to the vanilla Mi Note 10 and some people are willing to pay extra to get not one but two telephoto cameras. More than half of voters are interested in the Lite model, though most of them will wait for a promotional price before pulling the trigger. Only 18% of voters think that the recently-discounted Mi Note 10 is a better buy. Whether you go with the Note 10 or Note 10 Lite, it's still a win for Xiaomi, of...
Flashback: Nokia's Touch and Type blurred the lines between smart and feature phones Posted: 09 May 2020 09:11 PM PDT The division between smartphones and feature phones has often been murky. In the past, it used to be about how well the device ran user-installed apps and games, these days it's mostly touch screen vs. keypad. But there always were devices that straddled the line between those two categories. Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type official photos Before Nokia released the no-quite-smartphone Asha phones, there were the two Touch and Type models. As we said, these phones tried to have it both ways. The Nokia X3-02 and C3-01 both came out in late 2010. What made them special was that...
You will soon be able to make Google Duo group video calls on the web Posted: 09 May 2020 05:00 PM PDT Back in March, Google increased the group video call limit on Duo from eight to 12 participants at a time in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now the Internet search giant has announced that it will let Duo users make group calls on the web, starting as a preview on Chrome. The support for group calls on Chrome will roll-out in the coming weeks along with a new layout that will let you see more people at the same time. Besides, inviting people to join a group call will also become easier with an invite link. Additionally, Google announced a new Family Mode, that lets you doodle on...
Massive 6,000 mAh Realme battery gets certified Posted: 09 May 2020 02:30 PM PDT After successfully topping our all-time battery life chart, with the 5,000 mAh pack inside the Realme 6i, which you can read more about here, the Chinese company apparently has its sight set even higher. A TUV certification filing for a particular BLP793 battery pack has now been brought to light. Mainly since its rated capacity is a whopping 6,000 mAh. Well, 5,860mAh, to be precise, with a typical capacity of 6,000 mAh. But, the point stands. Battery certification The jury is now out on which phone we can expect to see this pack in. That's more guess-work than anything else,...
Redmi 10X listed on Google Play Console with slightly lower specs than expected Posted: 09 May 2020 12:30 PM PDT After a few sporadic appearances in the rumor mill, the Redmi 10X moniker seemed to have slipped into obscurity once again over the past week or so. Unfortunately, it has no re-emerged in a Google Play Console listing, along with some specs details. The unfortunate part being that the company is, apparently, going to go through with the confusing "generation-skipping" naming for what is a mostly a re-branded Redmi Note 9 for the Chinese market. The source doesn't really offer much in the way of specs, but does specifically list a MediaTek Helio G70 chipset for the Redmi 10X. A...

Two new mystery Realme phones visit TENAA - could be the X3 and X50 Youth Posted: 09 May 2020 08:30 AM PDT The plot continues to thicken around Realme's seemingly never-ending stream of new devices. Last month, a certain RMX2142 appeared on Chinese certification authority TENAA's website. Now, the very numerically-similar RMX2141 and the RMX2052 have joined its ranks. RMX2142 There are more than a few similarities between these devices, as listed by TENAA. All of them seem to have the exact same dimensions of 163.8 x 75.8 x 8.9mm, which, coincidentally, or rather not, match-up perfectly with the existing Realme X50m 5G. Same goes for the reported weight of the RMX2142 and the...
