Posted: 29 Mar 2020 07:54 AM PDT The smartphone world had an eventful week, with plenty of new phone being introduced - the P40 flagship family is finally official, Redmi revealed some rebranded smartphones and Xiaomi launched the Mi 10 lineup outside China. The week began with the ZTE Axon 11 5G - although it is a follow-up of the flagship Axon 10 flagship family, this one actually runs on Snapdragon 765G, so it doesn't qualify for the overall top tier of smartphones. It still looks intriguing and is likely to appear elsewhere in the upcoming months, just like its predecessor did the same time 12 months ago. ...
Flashback: Huawei Ascend P6 showed promise, but had much to learn Posted: 29 Mar 2020 04:27 AM PDT Huawei was one of the first companies to adopt Android - the U8220 was unveiled just months after the T-Mobile G1. But for this article we wanted to focus on one of the phones that laid the groundwork for what Huawei phones are today (and if you want to know more about the company's history, we recommend this Counterclockwise article). Huawei Ascend P6 official pictures The Huawei Ascend P6 was the thinnest mass market smartphone when it launched in June of 2013. It wasn't the thinnest, of course, there was a model from a little-known company called "vivo" that was even...
Weekly poll: the Huawei P40 phones are so good, but can you love them with no GMS on board? Posted: 29 Mar 2020 01:01 AM PDT It's that time of the year again - Huawei is pushing mobile photography forward with the launch of its new Leica-equipped P40 family of phones. The company even unveiled its own voice assistant, video chat and Cast protocol, but the question remains - would you buy these phones and leave the Google ecosystem behind? Huawei P40 Huawei P40 Pro Huawei P40 Pro+ First, let's consider why it's so tempting to do so. The Huawei P40 Pro brings the brand's first high refresh rate display (90Hz) and reworks the complicated hardware above the screen - the IR face scanner, ToF and...
Weekly poll results: the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max is the clear favorite, Note 9 Pro is in its shadow Posted: 28 Mar 2020 09:54 PM PDT The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max is the one to have, based on the results of last week's poll. The Max model proved significantly more popular than both its sibling and its predecessor. The most common reason to pick it over the Redmi Note 9 Pro seems to be the camera, though many appreciate the faster charging as well. The small price difference between the two models may have condemned the 9 Pro to be a distant second best to the 9 Pro Max. Just over a fifth of voters are not happy with either Redmi Note 9 Pro option, usually because there's no high refresh rate screen. Many wished for a...
Posted: 28 Mar 2020 06:33 PM PDT Realme 6i didn't get to participate in the launch eventof the Realme 6 and Realme 6 Pro, but that has more to do with strategy than with its shortcomings as a phone. In India, where the event was held, the 6i will be called Realme Narzo 10 and will get its own announcement, once the COVID-19 lockdown is over. As luck would have it we got unit and as is the norm we will share some early impressions before we begin work on the full review. The Realme 6i's predecessor - Realme 5i - is just three months old, but the rate at which Realme is evolving means we are still getting plenty of...
Redmi 9 shows up in a live image, quad camera for the masses Posted: 28 Mar 2020 03:05 PM PDT The Redmi 8 has been around for about 6 months now, which means it's due for a replacement. Apparently. A single live image of what is allegedly the Redmi 9 gives us a glimpse of what that replacement may look like. And it's a promising future, one in which entry-level phones have quad-cam setups on their backs. The source lists the modules as a 13MP main cam, an 8MP ultra wide, and a 5MP macro unit, plus a 2MP depth sensor. Alleged Redmi 9 (click for full size image) We're speculating the three actual cams are the ones lined up vertically, Redmi K30/Poco X2 style, with...

We got to review the P40 Pro in detail, spend some hands-on time with the P40 proper, and we're waiting for a chance to see the P40 Pro+ with its amazing 10x zoom periscope cam. Huawei P40 Pro display and front camera assembly P40 Pro rear camera cluster In the meantime, we get to examine a list of suppliers Huawei's worked with on the P40s, to the best of our... |
