HTC exec says that immersive VR games and movies will be the killer app for 5G

Posted: 04 Oct 2019 07:15 AM PDT

VR could be the killer app for 5G, says Raymond Pao, SVP of products and strategy at HTC Vive. He doesn't believe that the higher bandwidth and lower latency alone are enough to drive consumer adoption, but those two qualities of 5G networks are key for an immersive experience. VR movies and cloud games are "likely to be the largest application segments when 5G is combined with VR", says Pao based on a report from Ericsson. Pao mentions light fields as an example - light fields are much more advanced than the 3D you see at the cinema, they even allow you to look around objects. Check...

Duo for Android is the latest Google app to get Dark Mode

Posted: 04 Oct 2019 06:20 AM PDT

Google has released Dark Mode for many of its apps including Gmail and Play Store, and the latest to get this feature is the company's video calling app Duo. With the Dark Mode enabled, Duo's UI turns dark grey, with the text changing to light grey or white color. This reduces strain to your eyes and makes it easier to use the app in dim conditions. Dark Mode on Duo should turn on automatically if you are on Android 10 and have enabled system-wide dark mode. But, you can also turn it on manually from the app's settings menu if you are on an older version of Android. That...

Automated testing shows that the Samsung Galaxy Fold fails earlier than expected

Posted: 04 Oct 2019 04:30 AM PDT

Samsung claims that the Galaxy Fold will last 200,000 folds, which it estimates is 5 years of use. CNET decided to put those claims to the test and livestreamed the process using an automated machine that folds and unfolds the phone. The whole stream is 4 hours long and you can watch it below. We've cued up the video below to the bitter end of the phone - and it is bitter indeed, as it failed after just over 120,000 folds. That's 60% of the way to 200,000 folds or an estimated 3 years of use. Earlier, SquareTrade conducted a similar test (you can check out their short video here),...

iOS 13.1 puts a 5W cap on some wireless chargers

Posted: 04 Oct 2019 01:41 AM PDT

According to new reports, Apple's iOS 13.1 is putting a 5W cap on certain wireless chargers. The issue seems to be affecting both Apple certified and non-certified wireless pads. According to some reports, Qi wireless chargers from Belkin, Mophie and Anker are not affected. Now, ChargerLab reports that with iOS 13.1, Apple is only supporting 7.5W wireless charging for pads that support fixed-frequency voltage regulation which is recommended by Apple. This means that even the new iPhone 11 lineup which supports up to 10W fast wireless charging tops out a mere 5W on chargers which...

Report: Apple will launch iPhone SE 2 with iPhone 8 design and A13 chipset

Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:30 PM PDT

The iPhone SE launched in 2016 and it was a re-release of the iPhone 5's smaller hardware in a time when the 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhones seemed too large. The iPhone SE was essentially an iPhone 5 body updated with new internals and the camera of an iPhone 6S. It was meant for those who preferred a smaller, more pocketable iPhone. Rumors of a successor to the iPhone SE began swirling in 2017 and would have featured the same 4-inch form factor. Well, it's been over two years since then and rumors are again ramping up about a possible iPhone SE. The report comes from long-time Apple analyst...

Once at the forefront of the smartphone industry, Blackberry was on the verge of extinction before it was acquired by TCL several years go. At a recently held CCS Insight Predictions event, TCL's marketing GM Stefan Streit said that the company doesn't have plans to introduce 5G BlackBerry phones any time soon. It's not an entertainment device and you can already get your email really fast. We can have a lot of fun with 5G and where...

There will be changes to the camera app as well, including a new Dual Exposure feature. This mode will allow you to separately control the highlights and shadows in the photo. Posted: 03 Oct 2019 10:09 AM PDT

Apple likes to use film directors to show off how awesome the latest iPhone camera is and the iPhone 11 Pro is no exception. It tapped Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Knives Out), George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau) and others to shoot short films using just the phone. Here's Rian Johnson's film, "Paris 9/19". Last year, Steven Soderbergh shot the movie Unsane entirely on an iPhone 7 Plus (in case you missed it, check out the trailer here). The manual doesn't offer much detail about the cameras, unfortunately. ZTE Blade 20 (photos by FCC) Photos...
