130,000 iPhone 11s sold in South Korea on launch day Posted: 26 Oct 2019 06:50 AM PDT 130,000 units of the iPhone 11 family are believed to have been sold in South Korea yesterday, which was the launch day of Apple's latest in the country. The figure is an estimation, based on the number of new iPhone activations. It's a significant 30% jump compared to last year's sales. In 2018, it was estimated that 100,000 units of the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR found new owners on day one. Despite the marked increase in sales, the new iPhones can't quite match the Galaxy Note10's launch-day record of 220,000 units - hmm, it's almost as if the Galaxy has a home-field... |
ARM will work with Huawei again, decides its technology is of UK origin after all Posted: 26 Oct 2019 05:10 AM PDT British chipmaker ARM has stated that it will resume supplying chip technology to Huawei after having cut off ties with the Chinese company in May as a result of the US-China trade conflict. ARM has deemed its technologies to be of UK origin and as such supplying them to Huawei wouldn't be a breach of the US sanctions. Huawei's subsidiary HiSilicon, which designs the chipsets for company's smartphones, uses ARM blueprints as a base for its designs. ARM's v8-A architecture and its next generation aren't of US origin, the company has stated, hence the US restrictions don't apply. The... |
Apple talks privacy in latest video ad Posted: 26 Oct 2019 03:40 AM PDT Apple's posted a video to its YouTube channel highlighting the company's commitment to privacy when it comes to the iPhone. The video takes place at night (because that's when private things happen) and starts with a cityscape which leads up to the phone in your hands. Apple points out that your smartphone holds more personal information than you have in your house, and that you alone should be able to access that. And even if one does wonder just how useful their heart rate after a run could be to another person with malicious intent, the point stands - it's your personal data, you... |
Huawei nova 6 5G could be on the way, has a dual punch-hole selfie cam Posted: 26 Oct 2019 02:15 AM PDT Huawei's nova lineup is headed for an update, as evidenced by a render of what is reportedly a nova 6 5G. There are no less than six models in the nova 5 family so we can't imagine this nova 6 5G will be the only one to bear the 6 number, but here's what we can find out about it from this single picture. For starters, just like four out of the six nova 5s, the nova 6 5G will have a punch-hole selfie camera. Only this time it's a pill-shaped cutout indicating a dual-camera setup. Whether that's a ToF module next to an actual cam, or we'll be looking at two focal lengths, remains to be... |
Xiaomi Mi Note 10 and Mi Note 10 Pro bag several certifications, coming soon indeed Posted: 26 Oct 2019 01:10 AM PDT The forgotten Xiaomi Mi Note lineup may indeed be headed for revival as speculated a couple of weeks ago. Today, news comes in that not one but two Mi Note 10 handsets have received certification at different regulating agencies. The Mi Note 10 and Mi Note 10 Pro have received approval at the Thai NBTC and the EEC, and the former has also been spotted at the Singaporean IMDA. Sadly, there are no words on the handsets' specs and the best that can be extracted is the model names - M1910F4G for the regular model and M1910F4S for the Pro. Mi Note 10 at the EEC, 10 Pro at NBTC and again... |
Latest Google Camera mod enables Super Res Zoom and Astrophotography for Pixel and Pixel 2 Posted: 25 Oct 2019 03:34 PM PDT One of the most interesting features of the new Pixel 4 duo is the Astrophotography mode. With it, you can shoot nightscapes with impressive detail, including stars. Thanks to the developer community over at XDA-Developers, those with older Pixel phones will be able to try it out, along with the Super Res Zoom feature that debuted last year with the Pixel 3. GCam is a community developed app that ports features for the newer Pixels to older Google Pixels with support for a bunch of other non-Pixel devices as well. The latest update to Google Camera Mod 7.2 brings support for... |
Microsoft's Surface Duo will have a "world-class camera", says Panos Panay Posted: 25 Oct 2019 01:33 PM PDT Microsoft Germany invited devs and journalists to an event and Panos Panay, the company's Chief Product Officer, attended. As you can imagine, there were many questions about the Surface Duo. Panay didn't give away much, but he did reveal that Microsoft is "working on a world-class camera". Surface Duo renders Surface Duo prototype The prototype that was shown off earlier featured only a single selfie camera. There was a large round indentation on the back as well, presumably a placeholder for where the camera module would go. But again, just one. There's a full year... |
Huawei founder says the company will ship 270 million handsets this year Posted: 25 Oct 2019 11:23 AM PDT Earlier this week, Huawei announced via Social media that it shipped 200 million smartphones in 2019, 64 days earlier than the same milestone in 2018. Considering the ongoing China-US trade battle and Huawei's ban in the US, the company still manages to keep growing in smartphone market share. This is also thanks to huge discounts in China when the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro launched. Following the milestone announcement, Huawei Founder Ren Zhengfei revealed to European media that Huawei expects to ship 270 million smartphones this year, 20 million more than originally speculated by... |

Apple Pay is the top mobile payment platform in the US Posted: 25 Oct 2019 08:33 AM PDT Five years after its debut, Apple Pay is the leading US mobile payment platform for in-store purchases. A new report from eMarketer claims that Apple Pay has been the most used platform for mobile payments in the past year, surpassing the Starbucks mobile app which was (oddly) the US leader until recently. Apple Pay now has an estimated 30.3 million users followed by Starbucks with 25.2 million. It's also far ahead of competing services like Google Pay (12.1 million) and Samsung Pay (10.8 million). Apple Pay has been accepted very well by stores across the US and is estimated to be... |
