Microsoft will pull the plug on Windows Phone 8.1's app store on in mid-December Posted: 16 Oct 2019 07:44 AM PDT Microsoft stopped work on Windows Phone 8.1 back in July 2017, meaning that phones running the outdated OS no longer got software updates. Now the company is preparing to pull the plug completely and shut down the app store. Starting on December 16 2019, Windows Phone 8.1 users will no longer be able to download apps. Note that this means any app, even ones you already have - if you uninstall an app or reset your phone, there will be no way to get the app back. Also, apps will not receive updates. It's possible that some will suffer degraded functionality as Microsoft's services are... |
Samsung reportedly considers Ultra Thin Glass for its next foldable phone, a clamshell Posted: 16 Oct 2019 06:54 AM PDT The plastic screen cover of the Galaxy Fold is soft and easy to scratch. ET News reports that Samsung is considering swapping this plastic polyimide layer with Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) for its next foldable phone, which is expected early next year. UTG is only 0.1mm thick, not much thicker than a human hair. It's hard to manufacture, keeping the price high and the yield low. However, UTG looks much better than polyimide and should be more scratch resistant (the trade off is that it's more prone to shattering than the plastic). The upcoming phone reportedly folds down like a clamshell... |
Google discontinues Daydream VR, Pixel 4 does not support it Posted: 16 Oct 2019 06:12 AM PDT The new 90Hz screen of the Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL would have been awesome for use with the Daydream VR headset - unfortunately, Google has confirmed that the new Pixels do not support the VR headset. Perhaps that's not a huge surprise, the Pixel 3a phones didn't support it either and there hasn't been a new version of the headset in two years. 90Hz refresh rate would have brought the VR experience closer to desktop headsets - both the Oculus Quest and the HTC Vive Focus run at 60Hz, unlike the Vive Pro and Oculus Rift, for example. We only bring it up since it feels like a missed... |

Huawei's Q3 results show growing sales despite US ban Posted: 16 Oct 2019 04:49 AM PDT Huawei's Q3 earnings report is out and it shows that the company is faring quite well despite the ban by the US government. Combined revenues for the Q1-Q3 period totaled CNY 610.8 billion (around $86 billion) which is up 24.4 % from the same period last year. Jumping to smartphone shipments, the company managed to ship 185 million units through the first three quarters which is a 26% year-over-year increase. Huawei did not explicitly provide data for smartphone shipments in Q3 2019 alone but an estimate suggests the Q3 shipments should come in at around 67 million units. This would... |

The email sent by Realme also states that the company will have "other surprises" for us on November 20, but it's unclear what exactly it will be. That said, Realme isn't going to launch the... |
Samsung patents a reverse notch display Posted: 16 Oct 2019 12:48 AM PDT We had sore eyes for the notch when it first became a thing. People argued that it broke the phone's symmetry and disrupted the continuity of its design. Of course, one answer to that would be smartphones with dual notches (1,2), but let's hope we never see the day where those go mainstream. About a year ago, Samsung filed a patent with the KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office) and its details have just been published, the following mockup render comes from LetsGoDigital. Since the patent is simply for the design of a display, its description is not very informative. In order... |

Well, the company has officially confirmed the date by sharing a poster on Weibo. Meizu hasn't revealed any specs of the 16T yet (it did share a camera sample), but thanks to AnTuTu, we know it will come with a Snapdragon 855 SoC with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The smartphone will boot Android Pie and sport a FullHD+ display, which according to a TENAA listing, will measure 6.5" diagonally. The listing also confirmed a 8GB/256GB memory configuration along with a 4,400 mAh... |

The device comes with a 6.3-inch FHD IPS LCD with a selfie camera contained in a small notch. Just above the notch is a large speaker port, perhaps indicating the device will have stereo loudspeakers. Below the screen is a relatively large chin. The phone is said to pack a Snapdragon 665 chipset... |
Google teased a more advanced shooting mode at today's event Posted: 15 Oct 2019 09:30 PM PDT Today, Google held its MadeByGoogle event where it announced its latest hardware including the updated Pixel Buds, Nest Home Mini, Pixelbook Go, and Pixel 4 smartphone. The presentation covered Google's approach to photography and how it manages to get lots of details while also suppressing highlights from clipping. The presentation switches to talking about Night Sight at around 54:23. However, there is one scenario... |
Here's a Chinese OnePlus 7T ad starring Robert Downey Jr Posted: 15 Oct 2019 08:30 PM PDT An ad for the OnePlus 7T has been reposted to YouTube from Robert Downey Jr.'s Weibo account, starring the actor. The commercial features Robert Downey Jr., who is not a stranger to starring in OnePlus ads. It starts with actor Robert Downey Jr. breaking from a set for 5 minutes. As he leaves the sound stage, he plugs in the OnePlus Bullets and a OnePlus 7T and starts jamming out on the empty lot before he catches a tour group recording him with their OnePlus phones. It then somehow becomes a dance party until the producer comes looking for Downey to come back on set,... |
Xiaomi has already sold more than 100 million Redmi Note devices Posted: 15 Oct 2019 07:00 PM PDT Xiaomi's Redmi sub-brand has a very successful line of smartphones in its roster, and that is the Redmi Note line. The Chinese company has just announced that it's sold more than 100 million Redmi Note devices globally since the inception of this family back in 2014. So now there are apparently 100+ million happy users of a Redmi Note handset, whichever that might be. Previous milestones include the Redmi Note 7 series shipping over 4 million units by the end of March this year, while in July that number went up to 15 million, and yesterday it climbed all the way up to 20... |
Samsung Galaxy S11 to have a taller 20:9 screen Posted: 15 Oct 2019 05:30 PM PDT It's still early for solid Samsung Galaxy S11 leaks but we're now starting to get a small trickle of them going. First we got word that Samsung will start to test a new 5x periscope telephoto camera for the S11, and now, thanks to a leaked HTML 5 browser test, we get a hint of the Galaxy S11's new display. The device tested in the HTML 5 benchmark uses the SM-G416U model name, which is a placeholder name Samsung uses when testing its unreleased Galaxy S models. It unsurprisingly runs Android 10 but more interestingly, it packs a 20:9 screen aspect, as evidenced by the mock 384x854px... |

Google Pixel 4 doesn't come with unlimited original quality Google Photos storage Posted: 15 Oct 2019 02:30 PM PDT One of the differences between the Pixel 3a and 3a XL on one hand and the Pixel 3 and 3 XL on the other is that the former pair didn't get the latter pair's unlimited original quality image storage on Google Photos. All Pixels before have had that, but the decision to forgo this for the first mid-range Pixels seemed to make sense from a cost cutting standpoint. However, it looks like it wasn't just about that, and this in fact may be Google's new philosophy. That's because the newly unveiled Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are basically in the same boat as the 3a and 3a XL. Buy either device and... |
Google won't sell the Pixel 4 in India because of the radar hardware inside Posted: 15 Oct 2019 01:29 PM PDT Google finally made the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL official today after a huge amount of leaks, but that's not going to matter to Indian consumers interested in these devices. That's because, unlike past Pixels, these two are not going to be officially sold in India. Google cites the Soli radar tech that powers the Motion Sense gestures as the culprit. Soli works in the 60GHz frequency and the Indian government doesn't currently allow for public use of that. This means that, were Google to launch the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL in the subcontinent, it would have to do that with Soli... |

Around the back, we have a quad-cam setup with a 48MP main F/1.8 lens, 16MP ultrawide shooter, 2MP macro cam and 2MP depth sensor. Under the hood, we have last year's flagship Kirin 980 SoC paired with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage.... |
