JerryRig teardown of Redmi K20 Pro shows rubber seals, transparent version shows off the pop-up cam

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 08:00 AM PDT

After doing his usual durability test, Zack from Jerry Rig is ready to take the Redmi K20 Pro apart (in Europe, the phone is known as the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro). The most interesting component is the pop-up selfie, but the phone contains a few surprises too. Interestingly, there were rubber seals around every opening, including the pop-up camera. Officially, the K20 Pro lacks any water resistance, it's not even splash proof. Unofficially (and without any promises in terms of warranty), the phone might have a better chance of surviving encounters with liquids than most unrated phones. Anyway,...

HTC will focus on mid-rangers this year, integrate VR and 5G into 2020 phones

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 07:30 AM PDT

HTC's August revenue shot up 67% and the company is now planning its comeback. The start won't be glamorous, but the plan for next year is to leverage HTC's expertise in VR and 5G networks to help its smartphones stand apart from the competition. Darren Chen, President of HTC Taiwan, notes that two thirds of the local market is made up of phones under the NTD 10,000 mark (that's about $320). So, HTC will launch more phones targeting that segment. We guess we should expect more Wildfire and Desire phones. As for next year, HTC wants to integrate its VR know-how into phones. While...

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 04:26 AM PDT

Huawei's next generation of Mate flagships is just three days away from their official unveiling but you can get an early peek at their design, courtesy of @evleaks. This is not the first time we've seen the Mate 30 duo, but the Porsche Design special edition is quite something. Huawei Mate 30 Pro Let's start with the Huawei Mate 30 Pro. It has a round camera island with four cameras as expected. The LED flash and the 3D ToF sensor are on the side. The screen has a mid-sized notch (housing the new 3D face scanning hardware). We're excited to see the "waterfall" design in person - it...

Huawei Mate 30 RS Porsche Design also incoming

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 01:33 AM PDT

Huawei is releasing its Mate 30 series later this week. We expect at least the Huawei Mate 30 and the Mate 30 Pro to be announced, but there is a third phone in tow - Huawei Mate 30 RS Porsche Design. The device's arrival was announced by Richard Yu, CEO at Huawei and we expect it to be quite different than its regular siblings. The short eight-second clip suggests we should expect a back panel with vertical design elements. We also see a thin cutout, meaning the camera lineup on the back is likely to be in a different shape than the expected circular setup. It is not unusual for...

Oppo Reno Ace arriving on October 10

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 11:06 PM PDT

Oppo introduced three Reno2 smartphones in late August, but none of them were a true flagship specs-wise. At the end of the event the company VP Brian Shen actually revealed a new phone is incoming, called Reno Ace. Today, the Weibo account of the phone maker confirmed the device, revealing its launch date - October 10. The Oppo Reno Ace will have 65W fast-charging capabilities, which is 30% more than the current 50W SuperVOOC. This should mean a new name of the standard, something equally spectacular like MegaVOOC, although a simple SuperVOOC 2.0 would also do the job. Other...

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 04:00 PM PDT

The biggest story of the week is of course the announcement of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, new entry-level iPad and details on Apple TV+ and Arcade. The iPhone 11 is basically an XR with a new ultrawide camera, slightly larger battery and A13 chip. The iPhone 11 Pro comes in 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch sizes, adds heftier batteries, a new brighter f/2.0 telephoto camera along with a new ultrawide one. Naturally, both come with brighter OLED screens (which Apple...

Sony Xperia 5 in for review

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 11:00 AM PDT

Long live the Xperia Compact family! It appears that Sony heard our prayers and decided to release another compact flagship even if the new member to the family doesn't have "Compact" in its name. While the new naming scheme might not immediately give it away the Xperia 5 is actually a minimized Xperia 1. It's rocking the same high-end hardware and design. The resolution has been downgraded to 1080p and the battery capacity has been reduced slightly, but considering the smaller screen size we are actually expecting better battery life. Xperia 5 (on the left) and Xperia 1 (on the...
