Week 28 in review: The Galaxy Note10 and Pixel 4 renders are here

Posted: 14 Jul 2019 07:49 AM PDT

Another week done and dusted and it's time to fill those that weren't paying attention what exciting developments it brought. Both the Google Pixel 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Note10 leaked in renders. It's high summer now but we're already getting a fairly good idea of the Fall flagships and these two are among the most anticipated. The Google Pixel 4 renders are based on rumors so their accuracy might not be the best, but they do give a shape to the leaks and that shape is polarizing. Some hate the asymmetry due to the larger top bezel while others are let down by the dual (and not...

Weekly poll: are you happy with your current brand of phone?

Posted: 14 Jul 2019 03:42 AM PDT

According to a study conducted by Merrill Lynch Global Research a few months ago, a whopping 70% of iPhone owners intend to get another iPhone when it comes time to buy a new phone. Huawei was a distant second, with 54% of owners saying they'll stick with the brand. Samsung barely missed out on second place with 53%. Here's a table showing brand loyalty, the green cells are the percentage of people that will buy the same brand again. Note that while Pixels and BlackBerrys seem popular, less than 50 people of the 32,523 participants in the study had one. They may love their phones,...

With the first half of 2019 in the books it's time to take a look back at what phones it brought us and which of them really got your attention. There's an interesting stat if we look at the 20 phones in the list below. Nokia is represented by the Nokia 9 PureView, Oppo has the F11 Pro in the list, Huawei has the entire P30 lineup, Xiaomi has 5 phones and Samsung has an unprecedented 10 phones among the 20 most popular. Think about that for a moment - every other interesting phone to come out in the past six months was made by Samsung. That's impressive and it's a clear indication...

Weekly poll results: Mi CC9 loved, CC9e splits opinions

Posted: 13 Jul 2019 07:23 PM PDT

As Xiaomi keeps adding new product lines it gets harder to find the phone that suits you best. However, last week's poll shows that our readers had no trouble figuring out the new CC9 series. Long story short, one is great and the other is a tough sell. Two out of three people are in favor of the Xiaomi Mi CC9. That's a very positive result considering this model is up against the Redmi K20, which proved extremely popular in a poll a month ago. The Xiaomi Mi CC9e split opinions right down the middle - the poll ended at 50%-50% for and against the phone. That 720p+ screen is a real...

Flashback: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic - the little touchscreen that couldn't

Posted: 13 Jul 2019 03:37 PM PDT

In our new Flashback series we'll be taking a look back at some of the devices and events that shaped the mobile phone industry and brought us where we are today. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was a good phone for its time and with 8 million units sold in the first year of availability, it proved to be a commercial success by the Finnish giant, which was on top of the world. But if we remove our rose-colored glasses, we can see that this phone marked the beginning of the end of Nokia's dominance. When it came out in late 2008, the 5800 had just about everything you can want from a...

Posted: 13 Jul 2019 01:55 PM PDT

Huawei has filed a trademark application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, attempting to register the name Harmony for an operating system for mobile and computer use. The application is dated July 12, 2019, and is currently under examination. Huawei P30 Pro running Android 9.0 Pie-based EMUI Harmony joins Ark as the moniker the company may use on the global market for its in-house operating system. Conceived as HongMeng OS (which could also turn out to be the official name in some places, who knows), it has been in development for some time now, with reports...

Facebook to settle FTC probe for $5 billion, pending Justice Department approval

Posted: 13 Jul 2019 11:55 AM PDT

Facebook and the US Federal Trade Commission have agreed to a $5 billion settlement in the investigation over the social network's questionable practices in handling user data. The settlement now needs to be approved by the Justice Department, which is seen as just a procedural step with little possibility for a change in the outcome. The probe was started in early 2018 after it was revealed that user data Facebook shared with analytics company Cambridge Analytica was used to influence the 2016 presidential campaign. Subsequently, other controversial practices came to light, like...
