Weekly poll: is iOS 13 a worthwhile update for the iPhone? What about the iPad? Posted: 09 Jun 2019 06:00 AM PDT 13 is an unlucky number for the iPhone 6 (and older models), as well as some of the iPads that are past their prime - check out the full list of devices eligible for the iOS 13 update. But are you really missing out if you stay on iOS 12? Let's see what's new in iOS 13. Dark Mode! Seemingly a simple thing, but it means a great deal to many (and it's not all that simple, just ask Google). As rumors swirl that Apple will go all-in OLED as soon as next year (including the XR model), this mode will become indispensable for improving battery life and eye comfort. The built-in keyboard is...
Quad Bayer sensors: what they are and what they are not Posted: 09 Jun 2019 02:00 AM PDT Seemingly overnight, a great variety of phones with 48MP cameras appeared - the first ones launched in December 2018. And interestingly enough, many of them are mid-rangers while plenty of flagships have settled on a 12MP sensor. What's going on here? What we're seeing is the emergence of the Quad Bayer filter - we've covered it before when the Huawei P20 Pro debuted such a sensor (of 40MP resolution). And because we feel marketing departments often fail to understand what this sensor is about we felt we needed to step in and clear the confusion. What's a Bayer filter? Let's start...
Weekly poll results: Redmi K20 and K20 Pro get a warm welcome Posted: 08 Jun 2019 10:00 PM PDT Well, that's a surprise - no, not that people like the Redmi K20 duo, we expected that much, but that the vanilla model got a higher ratio of approval than the Pro. To be fair, the two phones are quite similar, except the non-Pro model offers an attractive discount on price. The Redmi K20 does settle for a Snapdragon 730 chipset, but it isn't exactly slow. It's been years since a new generation flagship chipset offered a massive improvement and some of the commenters over at last week's poll agree that it's not necessary to get the 800-series chip. If you want power the Redmi K20...
Galaxy S10+ Park Hang Seo Limited Edition comes in a stunning Prism Silver color Posted: 08 Jun 2019 06:00 PM PDT Samsung has never been a stranger to launching exclusive colors and editions of its phones well after their initial release date. The latest Galaxy S10 pair is no exception. Recently the couple received a Cardinal Red finish, as well as an Olympic Games Edition. Both of these fairly limited in availability, but not really quite as unattainable as the latest Galaxy S10+ Park Hang Seo Limited Edition. If you don't know who Park Hang Seo is (we admit we had to double-check as well), he is a former football player and the current coach of the Vietnam national football team. Which would...
Google Nexus 6P compensation plan is finally official. If you own one, keep on reading Posted: 08 Jun 2019 02:00 PM PDT In a rather uncommon, but definitely gratifying turn of events some unfortunate owners of the 2015 Google Nexus 6P can finally receive compensation for certain device issues. If you are not in the know about the whole saga, here's a quick rundown: The Nexus 6P suffered from two major issues, both officially acknowledged by software-vendor Google and the device manufacturer - Huawei. One caused a severe bootloop that even a factory restart could not fix, while the other saw the phone stud down with a fully charged battery. Now, roughly four years later and after a lengthy...
Huawei nova 5i passes through Geekbench with 6GB RAM Posted: 08 Jun 2019 12:00 PM PDT The Huawei nova 5i that appeared on Geekbench last week with 4GB RAM has now popped up on the benchmark database with 6GB RAM. However, while the 4GB RAM variant sports model number GLK-LX3, the 6GB RAM model comes bearing number GLK-LX2. The smartphone runs Android Pie and is powered by an octa-core processor with a base frequency of 1.71GHz. Huawei hasn't divulged much about the nova 5i, but thanks to its AnTuTu listing, we know it will come with a Kirin 710 SoC, 64GB storage, and a 2310 x 1080 pixel display. The nova 5i is rumored to launch at the end of this month, and it...
Flagship Samsung tablet spotted on GeekBench. Likely the Tab S5 Posted: 08 Jun 2019 10:00 AM PDT The last time Samsung updated its tablet lineup (we're not really counting the huge Galaxy View 2) back in February it took the wrapping off the Tab S5e. A pretty mouth-watering offer, especially if you are after one of Samsung's industry-leading Super AMOLED units in as big of a diagonal possible. The Tab S5e comes with a 10.5 inch one for just around EUR 400, along with a whole bag of other goodies and features and a fresh new, ultra-slick 5.5mm body. Like the Tab S5e moniker suggests, however, it is not a true flagship device. It certainly looks, feels and has more than enough...
Posted: 08 Jun 2019 08:00 AM PDT Google is definitely writing some big checks when its comes to its Stadia cloud gaming service. There are still a lot of questions to be answered before we can even make any educated guesses on how well the online titan will eventually cash said checks. One thing is for sure, though - Stadia is closer than ever. With pre-orders for the $129 Founder's edition already live and a an initial launch scheduled for November, the gaming industry as a whole could very well be on the brink of a paradigm-shifting event. For better or for worse, of course, since there are many aspects to consider...
