Posted: 10 Jul 2022 04:02 PM PDT

While the summer months are usually calm in terms of new device announcements, the past week saw its fair share of new phone and tablet launches so here's a recap of all the notable devices that got announced. Huawei kicked things off on Monday with its nova10 and nova10 Pro midrangers. These come with nearly identical specs including 120Hz OLED displays, 50MP main cams and Snapdragon 778G 4G chipsets capped. The Pro model boasts a larger 4,500 mAh battery with faster 100W wired charging while the non-Pro gets a 4,000 mAh cell with 66W charging speeds. Huawei nova 10 and nova 10...

Oppo details what makes the Find X5 Pro's screen special

Posted: 10 Jul 2022 01:04 PM PDT

A phone's screen is incredibly important because it's your main point of interaction with it and all its innards. Your handset might have the best chipset and the best cameras, but if the screen isn't very good, you'll definitely notice - after all, you are looking at it every time you use your phone. There are two main screen technologies on the market currently as you may know, and IPS panels have mostly lost traction in favor of OLEDs, especially at the high end. But not all OLEDs are the same - yes, they all have the inky blacks, thanks to the way the pixels work, but other than that,...

Week 27 in review: The 1-inch Xiaomi 12S Ultra is here, ROG Phone 6 Pro is official

Posted: 10 Jul 2022 07:06 AM PDT

Another week down, and as big ones go, this was it. Right on cue, Xiaomi unveiled the 12S series with the Xiaomi 12S, 12S Pro, and the highly-anticipated 12S Ultra. We'll start with the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, as it's been one of the most read-about devices on our website. It finally broke the 1-inch type barrier on a phone with the Sony IMX989. The behemoth sensor is around 30% larger than the 1/1.12" sensor in the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, which in itself was already the largest imager on a smartphone. The new main camera can lean on Leica's photographic expertise. There are two photographic...

Posted: 10 Jul 2022 04:09 AM PDT

Amazon's Prime Day is next week (July 12-13), but here is a preview of the deals you can expect from Huawei – the company will slash the prices of its products on Amazon UK by up to 54%. The Huawei MatePad T 10s (4/64GB) will be £125, 30% off its regular price. This is an affordable 10" tablet with an IPS LCD (1,920 x 1,200px) and a Kirin 710A, not the fastest chipset around but is comparable to the chip in the Kindle Fire HD 10. Note: this tablet uses the Huawei AppGallery instead of the Google Play Store. Huawei MatePad T 10s There will be a variety of wearables on offer...

Tecno Camon 19 Pro in for review

Posted: 10 Jul 2022 01:11 AM PDT

This is the Tecno Camon 19 Pro, which was announced at Rockefeller Center in New York just last month. It's a very good package for a great price, equivalent to $210, although limited availability means not everyone will be able to get it at that price. The phone ships in a well-equipped box with a 33W charger, a USB cable, 3.5mm earbuds, and a case. We got both the Camon Premier 19 Pro and its stablemate, the 19. They both have 6.8-inch IPS LCDs of 1080p resolution, but the Pro refreshes at 120Hz, while the vanilla does standard 60Hz. Both phones have a 5,000mAh battery, but...

Weekly poll: if you could get a Xiaomi 12S, 12S Pro or 12S Ultra, would you?

Posted: 09 Jul 2022 10:23 PM PDT

1" sensors are the holy grail of small digital cameras – are they really that good? We're about to find out as we already have a Xiaomi 12S Ultra in for review. Unlike the recent Xperia Pro-I (which reused the sensor from the Sony RX100 VII), this phone is the first to use Sony's new IMX989. The sensor isn't everything, however, processing matters just as much – if not more in these form factors. This is where Leica comes in, the veteran lens maker from Germany switched teams and lent its experience to the whole 12S series. This includes the Xiaomi 12S and 12S Pro, which are based...

Weekly poll results: AR more promising than VR, but neither is guaranteed success

Posted: 09 Jul 2022 07:14 PM PDT

Last week's poll brings unexpected results – Augmented Reality glasses are the type of XR that holds the most promise. That being said, there just isn't much confidence that XR tech is ready for mass adoption or even useful. The technology has been improving at a rapid pace, riding on the coattails of smartphones – high quality displays with high refresh rates and the efficient chipsets that power some of the experiences could only have been developed in the cutthroat smartphone business. No one has perfected the formula yet. Several comments mentioned the Ready Player One movie,...

Flashback: a decade of Google Nexus/Pixel prices and software updates

Posted: 09 Jul 2022 04:02 PM PDT

The Nexus 4 was a groundbreaking phone – a near flagship for $300. Okay, it did have its quirks, e.g. no LTE support (though that wasn't as important back in 2012), storage was limited too. Instead of focusing on just one phone we wanted to look at the trends in Google's phone line-up. We mentioned the price of the Nexus 4 and we'll see what happened to the "flagship killer" status of the series. This series is all about exploring a well recognized trait of a particular brand or series – and we think that software support is one of the defining features of the Nexus and Pixel...

Tecno Camon 19 in for review

Posted: 09 Jul 2022 09:04 AM PDT

Tecno is becoming ever more popular with fans of affordable but capable phones. And with good reason. The maker's recent efforts have all been offered hardware that punches well above its price class. The Tecno Camon 19 is the latest in this line of devices. We got the Sea Salt White, which has an iridescent finish that's handsome in any light. There's an even prettier Digital Green model out there as well. The Tecno Camon 19 comes in a package with an 18W charger, USB cable, and a case (which is on the phone in the image below). Specs-wise, the Tecno Camon 19 sounds solid,...

Samsung's Expert RAW camera app will get two new features with next update, release for older models delayed

Posted: 09 Jul 2022 06:30 AM PDT

Samsung has announced two new features for its Expert RAW camera app, which will be available for the users with the next update. First is the Custom Preset feature, which will let users save their custom camera settings and use them to take pictures again. Second is the Save Format menu, which will allow users to save the shots captured through the Expert RAW app in RAW or JPEG format. Right now, the app stores the photos in both file formats, which could be inconvenient. In addition to announcing new features, Samsung also said that the release of Expert RAW for the Galaxy S20 Ultra,...

Elon Musk pulls out of $44 billion Twitter deal, social network plans to pursue legal action

Posted: 09 Jul 2022 03:21 AM PDT

Tesla CEO Mr. Elon Musk announced his plans to buy social networking site Twitter in April for $44 billion but later put the acquisition on hold as he awaited more data about the spam bots on Twitter. While Musk said the deal was not out of question and could happen at a lower price, the world's richest person is now terminating the deal. Musk's team, in a filing with USA's Securities and Exchange Commission, cites "material breach of multiple provisions" of the agreement and "false and misleading representations" by Twitter as the reasons for the deal's termination. The social network is...
