iOS 14.2 update quietly added 1080p FaceTime support for iPhone 8 and newer Posted: 03 Dec 2020 05:26 AM PST The iPhone 12 series enabled with support for 1080p video calls in FaceTime. As usual, Apple takes good care of its older devices too, so the iOS 14.2 update quietly added 1080p support for older models as well. The 2017 generation (iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X) and later have been updated, including the budget iPhone SE (2020). Previously, they were capped at 720p for video calls. This doesn't quite put them on equal footing with the 12-series, which can also do 1080p over 5G – either Apple doesn't believe 4G is fast enough to beam up FullHD or it's a bit of product... |

Apple facing more “batterygate” lawsuits in Europe Posted: 03 Dec 2020 12:47 AM PST At the start of this week, Apple was fined €10 million (about $12 million) in Italy over its misleading water resistance claims. Last month Cupertino agreed to pay $113 million in settlements with its consumer fraud allegations in over 30 US states over its infamous "batterygate" practices affecting iPhone 6, iPhone 7 and iPhone SE models. Now, a total of five European consumer organizations filed new class-action lawsuits against Apple in Belgium and Spain over the same planned obsolescence claims and the intentional slowdown of iPhone 6 and 6s series devices. Qualcomm to launch a new 7-series Snapdragon chipset in Q1 2021 Posted: 02 Dec 2020 10:19 PM PST Qualcomm introduced its new flagship chipset called Snapdragon 888 earlier this week. We expected an upper-midrange platform to take the stage as well, but the San Diego company had nothing more to share about a new 700 series top dog. According to one leakster on Weibo, the new chipset will be introduced in Q1 2021 and will start shipping almost immediately. So far we... |
Brazilian pro-consumer agency doesn’t buy Apple’s reason for removing chargers Posted: 02 Dec 2020 09:59 PM PST With the iPhone 12, Apple removed the charging adapters from the retail packaging, claiming that the change will reduce carbon emissions. Apple also claimed that most people already have a charger lying around. While most of the world shrugged and went along with Apple's eco-explanation, one region in Brazil is not buying what Apple is selling. The public consumer protection agency for the Brazilian state of São Paulo has officially asked Apple to include chargers with new iPhones or it will face fines. Back in October, Procon-SP (the pro-consumer agency in São Paulo) asked Apple... |

Google Pixel 5 durability test looks for metal under layers of plastic Posted: 02 Dec 2020 04:48 PM PST Google's highest-end smartphone of the year isn't a true flagship, because it's missing the top of the line chipset. Even so, the Pixel 5 is interesting to see in a sea of similar looking glass-sandwich devices. On its website, Google keeps advertising how the phone is made out of metal, so YouTuber Zach from JerryRigEverything decided to go hunting for that metal, during one of his trademark durability testing videos. Spoiler alert: what you're touching when you hold the Pixel 5 isn't metal, aside from the power button. The rest of the phone has layers of plastic hiding that metal, if we... |

This seems to be happening more often with Verizon and AT&T users but T-Mobile clients experience the issue too. A separate Reddit thread has been created just for this and owners of iPhone 12 say that this happens mostly while they are traveling by car. The workaround, for now, is to turn on the airplane mode on and off again. One of the commenters said that he was able to reach... |

The lower-priced MacBook Air along with a re-designed MacBook Pro, probably the 13-inch model, will be the first from the MacBook family to adopt the new display tech. iPads will get the same treatment but the MacBooks will remain the driving force of mini LED adoption mostly... |
