There will be five Snapdragon 875-powered flagships in Q1 with 100W charging, says leakster Posted: 20 Nov 2020 06:44 AM PST Qualcomm will reveal the Snapdragon 875 soon, the official event is set for December 1. Besides faster performance, the new chip will also bring support for 100W fast charging thanks to the latest Quick Charge 5. Leakster Digital Chat Station says that there will be 5 new flagship smartphones in the first three months of 2021 that will offer the potent combination of the 875 chip and a 100W power brick. Samsung's Galaxy S21 phones might be among them, we're already seeing them crop up in benchmarks. The OnePlus 9 Pro also ran Geekbench, this one is expected to come out in mid-March.... |
Teardown of M1-powered MacBook Air and Pro shows very little has changed Posted: 20 Nov 2020 05:52 AM PST The new M1-powered MacBooks promise a computing revolution, but it seems that said revolution is entirely concentrated into the M1 chip. The rest of the laptop is more or less the same. iFixit took apart the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro and put them side by side with the Intel-powered models that they replace. And, well, see for yourself, you'd be hard pressed to say what has changed. Even the fan in the Pro is the exact same component. MacBook Pro: Intel (left) • M1 (right) Why is it much quieter than the Intel version then? Simple, the Apple M1 is so efficient it barely... |
DxOMark tests iPhone 12 Pro selfie camera, gives it a solid if unspectacular mark Posted: 20 Nov 2020 05:03 AM PST Last week DxOMark published its iPhone 12 Pro camera review and the results showed slight improvements over its predecessor. Now, the selfie cam review is out and the verdict is similar – it's a balanced and capable sensor though not quite industry-leading. Still, shots were noticeably better than the iPhone 11 Pro duo from last year. The iPhone 12 Pro's front cam managed a 98-point total score, placing it seventh in the overall rankings. It shares the spot with the Asus Zenfone 6 and is just a point behind Samsung's Galaxy Note10+ which sits at 99 points. iPhone 12 Pro selfie... |
Huawei Mate X2 arrives at TENAA, unknown 5G phone tags along Posted: 20 Nov 2020 04:05 AM PST The TET-AN00/TET-AN10 – which is believed to be the Huawei Mate X2 – has received the stamp of approval from TENAA, a few days after passing through the 3C. This means the phone is good to go and the official announcement could be around the corner. The full information from the certification process has not been published yet. Leaks suggest that the new foldable will keep the screen size at 8", but will switch to an in-folding design (the original X leaves the display outside). As seen in patent drawings, this change requires a secondary screen to remain outside – a narrow 4.5" panel.... |
Apple and Facebook lock horns over data collection practices Posted: 20 Nov 2020 03:13 AM PST Apple has sent a letter to human rights watch groups in which it is reassuring the new iOS 14 will have new privacy restrictions. The company also said Facebook is "collecting user data with disregard of user privacy". A response from Menlo Park came almost immediately, saying Apple is throwing a smoke bomb and trying to distract from other issues. The social network claimed Apple is using its dominant market position to self-preference its own data collection while making it nearly impossible for competitors to use the same data. Apple has delayed the rollout of privacy... |
Oppo Reno5 5G series will come with a trio of chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek Posted: 20 Nov 2020 02:22 AM PST We've been seeing details about Oppo's upcoming Reno5 5G series for a while now. We know there's a vanilla Reno5 5G as well as a Pro version powered by Mediatek's Dimensity 1000 chipset. Oppo PEGM00/PEGT00 (Reno5 5G) Now, well-known Chinese blogger Digital Chat Station confirmed we'll see versions of the Reno5 5G series with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 and 765G chips as well as Mediatek's Dimensity 1000. It remains to be seen what model will get which chipset. The new leak also confirms all three phones will come with punch hole displays and an unspecified high refresh rate. The... |
Ericsson argues against Huawei's ban in Sweden Posted: 20 Nov 2020 01:34 AM PST Huawei was recently banned from supplying 5G equipment to carriers in Sweden, the home country of its rival Ericsson. It has now received support from an unexpected place as the Ericsson CEO Borje Ekholm said in an interview that this decision is restricting free competition and trade. He also said the ban will delay the rolling out of the new technology. Exactly one month ago the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) released a list of four companies that are allowed to compete for 5G frequencies in the North-European country. Two of the conditions were that installations must not... |
Google Stadia is coming to iOS as a web app Posted: 20 Nov 2020 12:44 AM PST Google has announced that its game-streaming service Stadia will soon debut on iOS. It won't arrive in the form of a dedicated iOS app, as Apple said those violate the terms of its App Store, so instead it will be available to iOS users in the form of a progressive web app (PWA). A PWA allows developers to deliver an app-like experience through a website, and by using a web app to bring Stadia to iOS, Google will be able to bypass Apple's App Store rules. Google hasn't revealed when exactly Stadia will launch on iOS, but confirmed that public testing for the service will begin in... |

The phone, also spotted at the Guangzhou Mobile Exhibition, will have a Snapdragon 765G chipset, two storage options and an OLED screen with curved sides. There isn't an official specs sheet yet, but the highlights have been confirmed by an info card placed in... |
Redmi Note 9 series is coming to China on November 26 Posted: 19 Nov 2020 10:39 PM PST Redmi's Note 9 series smartphones debuted earlier this year but they are only now coming to the company's homeland. Redmi set an event for November 26 when it will bring the Redmi Note 9 lineup to China. Redmi hasn't revealed the names of the Note 9 smartphones coming to China next week, but its Weibo post suggests we are looking at three devices. The company also shared a teaser for one of them, which could be the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G. It has four cameras on the back inside a circular island, a SIM card slot on the left frame, and a volume rocker and power button on the right with a... |
iPhone 12 Pro Max video teardown shows what sensor shift image stabilization is all about Posted: 19 Nov 2020 09:17 PM PST This year the iPhone 12 Pro Max doesn't differ from the Pro in just size (with the usual implications regarding screen area and battery capacity). Apple's also tweaked the camera setup, bringing to the market its first sensor shift image stabilization system for the main camera of the Pro Max. YouTuber Zach from JerryRigEverything has thus decided to dilligently go looking for what makes this different, by peeking right at the sensor itself. In order to do that, though, a full teardown of the iPhone 12 Pro Max was required. Thankfully, it's all recorded on video for your viewing... |
iOS 14.2.1 rolls out with fixes for iPhone 12 family Posted: 19 Nov 2020 07:04 PM PST Apple is rolling out a new version of iOS today, but this one is unlike most. Usually a new iteration of the software goes out to all supported devices, but this time around we have an exception. iOS 14.2.1 is only headed to the members of the newly released iPhone 12 family: the 12 itself, the 12 mini, the 12 Pro, and the 12 Pro Max. When you look at the changelog, this makes sense, because the iterative upgrade only aims to do one thing: fix issues that have popped up on the new iPhones. For example, the iPhone 12 mini's lock screen could become unresponsive at times, but... |
Poco M3 renders leak showing unconventional design Posted: 19 Nov 2020 04:42 PM PST The Poco M3 is going to become official on November 24, and now, just a few short days before that happens, an image has been outed, purportedly showcasing the upcoming device. As you can see from these leaked renders, the Poco M3 seems to continue the unconventional branding trend started by the Poco X3. This time the logo isn't as huge, but it is in a place you don't see such inscriptions often - symmetrically placed at the opposite side of the camera island. Speaking of that, three cameras are on the back, next to what looks like a dual-LED flash. The Poco M3 looks likely to... |
Samsung Galaxy A70 gets One UI 2.5 update Posted: 19 Nov 2020 01:43 PM PST The latest Samsung smartphone to receive the One UI 2.5 firmware update is the Galaxy A70. The update is already seeding in Europe and more regions are expected to follow in the coming days. It bears the A705FNXXU5CTK4 build number and comes in at just over 1.4GB in size. Some Apple iPhone 12 units plagued by display tinting and flickering Posted: 19 Nov 2020 12:12 PM PST According to numerous reports, some iPhone 12 series units are plagued by display issues. These include screen flickering and yellow/green tinting which were even acknowledged by Apple in an internal document obtained by MacRummors. The note which has allegedly been issued to Apple Authorized Service Providers confirms that Apple is aware of the display problems and is conducting its own investigation on the matter. In the meantime, Cupertino has advised technicians in its authorized service centers to not service affected iPhones for the time being and instead suggest owners to... |
Images of cases show the Galaxy A12 5G will have a design similar to the A42 5G and M12 Posted: 19 Nov 2020 10:57 AM PST Yet another "x2" Samsung phone has surfaced, this time it's the Galaxy A12 5G. As you can tell by the name, this will be a fancier version of the Galaxy M12. It will have 5G connectivity, but it's not clear if it will get to keep the 7,000 mAh battery. Anyway, the design of the Galaxy A12 can be seen in these images showing off a transparent case. It's very similar to the Galaxy A42 5G and the M12 designs with a square camera bump. These images confirm an earlier report that the phone will have a triple camera (what the element in the upper left does is unknown). Samsung Galaxy... |
Galaxy Z Fold3 will be Samsung's first phone with under display cam, report explains how it's done Posted: 19 Nov 2020 09:44 AM PST Last month we heard claims that Samsung is planning to introduce its first under-display camera (UDC) with the Galaxy Z Fold3 (and that the Galaxy S21 phones will miss out on this feature). Now a new report from ETNews reinforces those. An industry insider says that Samsung Display has developed a screen that will support UDC. The gap between pixels was made wider to allow light to pass through. Even so, special algorithms are needed to correct the image as light is refracted by the OLED display layer. The camera module will be supplied by Samsung LSI. Only the area over the camera lens... |
Huawei has made a PC powered by its own silicon as well, a HiSilicon-designed ARM CPU Posted: 19 Nov 2020 08:47 AM PST Apple is not the only company working on computers powered by in-house silicon – Huawei is too. This is part of a larger project in China to wean itself off Western technology reliance. Details and photos of the MateStation B515 have surfaced, a desktop computer that will be sold to the government and corporations first, before making it available to the population at large. As such, this needs to be an expandable high-performance device. A close-up and details of the Kunpeng 920-based motherboard • MateStation B515 box with specs Interestingly, it's powered by an ARM... |
