Apple iPhone 12 Pro Ceramic Shield scratches like regular glass, torture test finds

Posted: 28 Oct 2020 09:09 AM PDT

The iPhone 12 Pro is the latest phone to enter the JerryRig durability test and unsurprisingly it passed without issue. What's also not surprising is that the iPhone's new Ceramic Shield front glass scratched at the same level as any regular glass screen - at a level 6 on Mohs' scale of hardness. The scratches do appear fainter, but they're scratches nonetheless. Apple has coated the glass with nanoscale ceramic crystals, increasing the glass' endurance to breaking, not scratching. An interesting side effect of the added ceramic was discovered in the burn test, where the iPhone screen...

Posted: 28 Oct 2020 08:18 AM PDT

As of now Google pays Apple between $10b and $12b a year to be the main search provider on Apple devices, but that deal will soon expire and a reported antitrust case against Google by the US Department of Justice could prevent its extension. Apple has already made moves for a transition away from Google. Its Applebot, which was first reported of in 2014, has been crawling the web ever since and has allegedly increased its rate substantially recently. Furthermore, in iOS 14's home screen search, Apple has begun to...

Apple iPhone 12 dormant reverse wireless charging revealed by FCC

Posted: 28 Oct 2020 05:49 AM PDT

According to an FCC filing, the recently released iPhone 12 family might be hiding a reverse wireless charging feature, much like several of its Android rivals. The functionality has been rumored to appear with iPhone 11 but was then revealed that Apple has removed the feature in the final testing phase. A teardown from last year showed that not all the required hardware was in place. This year, however, the iPhone 12 seems to be rocking all the hardware that's needed to charge an accessory wirelessly. Of course, Apple hasn't mentioned anything about the feature and it's not currently...

Posted: 27 Oct 2020 11:15 PM PDT

Qualcomm is about to launch the Snapdragon 875 chipset in December, and we expect a "lite" version of the flagship platform to tag along. It will sit as a more affordable chip that can offer pretty similar performance, while missing on a few features. The leakster that goes by the (machine-translated) name Digital Chat Station revealed Oppo is developing a smartphone that will have that new chip with a working name Snapdragon 870. The new chipset by Qualcomm will be able to reach 3.2 GHz speed of the CPU, and we assume this will be only one super-powerful core and not a cluster of...

Posted: 27 Oct 2020 09:19 PM PDT

Ever since reports surfaced that Huawei was working on its own operating system called Harmony OS (also known as HongMeng OS), rumors swirled that the company would eventually replace Android with it. Huawei eventually refuted that the OS wasn't intended for smartphones. Of course, this was before the Huawei ban was issued by the Trump Administration. Huawei officially announced it last August. A new report from MyDrivers cited an interview with Wang Chenglu, Head of Software Development at Huawei Consumer Business Group. In this interview, the question of how EMUI 11 and HongMeng OS was...

Now the XDA team has decided to get in the driver's seat and make a phone of its own. It partnered with F(x)tec to build the hardware so it can focus on the software. Fittingly, it chose LineageOS, the phoenix that rose from the Cyanogen ashes. But that's not all, Ubuntu Touch OS is supported out of the box. The team managed to get HDMI out working (over USB-C), so you can hook up a large monitor and peripherals to turn the phone into a Linux desktop. Ubuntu can...
