| Flashback: the Samsung Galaxy Note II writes an even better story than the first one Posted: 09 Aug 2020 07:39 AM PDT The original Galaxy Note changed the shape – or rather the size – of smartphones. It was the first to make huge displays cool. The sequel, the Samsung Galaxy Note II, went even bigger and stretched the new Super AMOLED panel from 5.3" to 5.5". This new panel had a full RGB stripe, like the one used on the Galaxy S II and unlike the PenTile arrangement of most other Super AMOLEDs. This helped improve image quality even though resolution was actually slightly reduced – 720 x 1,280 px vs. 800 x 1,280 px of the original. | Weekly poll: Did the Galaxy Note20, Note20 Ultra and Z Fold2 live up to expectations? Posted: 09 Aug 2020 04:22 AM PDT It would be a cliche to call the Galaxy Note20 Ultra "the best Samsung smartphone ever" even if it's probably true. But it's strange that we can't call the vanilla Note20 "the second best", it's not even close. The Ultra costs an arm and a leg – $1,300/€1,266 – and yet it is a bit cheaper than the S20 Ultra despite having double the storage. And the faster Snapdragon 865+ too. Well, sort of. Europe, India, Brazil and Australia are getting the old Exynos 990 chipset, so there's no performance upgrade for them. The Note20 Ultra also brings the second iteration of Samsung's best camera... |
Weekly poll results: the Oppo Reno4 Pro fails to impress Posted: 09 Aug 2020 01:03 AM PDT The Oppo Reno4 Pro has landed – with a thud. Last week's poll shows that the phone cannot lure buyers away from similarly priced competitors. What went wrong? The short answer would be "the Nord happened". For the same price, it offers the better chipset (S765), a closer to stock OS and 5G connectivity (for those who care). It's behind on charging speed, however. Still, while 65 W charging is rare in this price range, it wasn't enough to keep the Reno4 Pro afloat. We saw something similar in the Poco M2 Pro poll – people like fast charging, but it's a secondary concern to having a good...
Posted: 08 Aug 2020 09:42 PM PDT Infinix is gearing-up for a new device launch. The Hot 10 has surfaced online, from a couple of sources, under the X682C and X682B model numbers. The Google Play Console entry for the phone is quite descriptive. It even features a render of the handset. One that looks very similar to the current Infinix Hot 9. We only get a see the front side of the Hot 10, though. Infinix Hot 10 on the Google Play Console And, in fact, the camera setup is about the only thing left to the imagination by these leaks. That and the display diagonal. We know that the Hot 10 will be based on the...
Hot take: Samsung Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra Posted: 08 Aug 2020 06:33 PM PDT The Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra – while expensive – feels like a flagship with great potential. In contrast, the Galaxy Note20 – also quite expensive – feels like you'd be better off getting a Note10+ instead. What happened? Domino effect When it comes to displays, the difference between the Galaxy Note20 Ultra and the vanilla Note20 is quite stark. This time it isn't size – at 6.9" and 6.7" they are closer than before – but it's the type of the panel used. The Ultra has sharp 1440p+ display that can refresh at 120Hz. This also brings 240Hz touch sampling rate, Samsung wants...
iPhone 12 series will reportedly support BeiDou navigation Posted: 08 Aug 2020 04:00 PM PDT Apple and the iPhone line, in particular, has never had an easy relationship with the Chinese market. Constantly thwarted by local regulations and many legal and political circumstances. Hence, the equal ports shocking and perfectly justifiable nature of the fact that iPhones still lack official support for China's BeiDou navigation system. According to a new report from industry insiders, that might finally change with the introduction of the iPhone 12 family. On Wednesday, BeiDou spokesperson and director of the China Satellite Navigation Office, Ran Chengqi, mentioned in an interview...
Huawei Mate X2 to come with an inward folding display Posted: 08 Aug 2020 02:00 PM PDT Huawei has announced two foldable smartphones until now - the Mate X and Mate Xs - which come with outward folding displays. But the Mate X2 will be different as it's said to feature an inward folding display. Word comes from Ross Young, who's the Founder and Lead Analyst of DisplaySearch and DSCC. In reply to a tweet by reliable leakster Evan Blass, Young claimed that Mate X2 will have an inward folding display, which will be sourced from Samsung and BOE. And it won't be the UTG type, but CPI instead. Huawei Mate X with outward folding design This isn't the first time we are...
