Xiaomi to add back tapping gestures in MIUI 12

Posted: 28 Jul 2020 08:39 AM PDT

Deep inside the MIUI 12 beta code, XDA-Developers was able to unearth a back tap feature that was introduced in Apple's iOS 14 and is reportedly on its way to Google Pixel phones as well. But Xiaomi's implementation takes things one step further. From the screenshots below, you can see that there's a triple-tap on the back in addition to the double-tap. The list of supported tasks has been expanded so you can open up the control center, notification shade, the default camera app or take a screenshot by double or triple-tapping on the phone's back. Options for the back tap...

Posted: 28 Jul 2020 07:06 AM PDT

The 4G version of the LG Velvet – the one that uses a Snapdragon 845 instead of a 765G – is here. And, surprisingly, "here" is Europe. This phone was first spotted in Iran and there were some clues about a possible Brazil launch. That may still happen, but there's nothing on the official LG sites for those countries yet. For now it can be found in Germany and Hungary. In Germany, Saturn is asking €500 and says that the first units will be available on the 31st (this Friday). MediaMarkt will sell the phone as well, though there's no price or launch date yet. LG Velvet 4G in and...

Red Magic 5S debuts with improved cooling system, 144Hz refresh rate display and Snapdragon 865

Posted: 28 Jul 2020 06:15 AM PDT

The Red Magic 5G released back in March and now we have its successor with the Red Magic 5S which brings an overhauled cooling system with a silver-plated vapor chamber. The rest of the spec sheet, as well as the phone's design, are quite similar to the outgoing Red Magic 5G down to the dimensions. The big new addition to the 5S is the silver-plated cooling pad stylized as ICE Ag. It should deliver better results than the conventional copper heat pipes in most smartphones resulting in lower throttling. The phone also retains the 15,000 RPM spinning fan from its predecessor which also...

It's not clear if this will be a market ready product or a prototype, though. Alongside that we'll also see an immersive 144Hz display. This one isn't unprecedented - even iQOO itself has phones with it, but perhaps there's a new twist to it. We'll report back with any...

Posted: 28 Jul 2020 01:07 AM PDT

After the Razr 2019 rekindled Motorola's iconic Razr series, the maker is set to expand its foldable ambitions in 2020. We've been hearing about a 5G successor to the 2019 Razr and now Evan Blass has provided renders of the device which appears to share plenty of similarities to the current model. We can see the overall dimensions of the phone will be similar to the Razr 2019 with the same notch at the top of the main screen though its chin has been slimmed down. The capacitive fingerprint scanner has also been removed which could mean it's moved below the screen or on the side power...

Xperia 1 II screenshots after the update The package is just about 75 MB and brings improvements to the front camera during video calls as well. However, there still isn't any sort of Night Mode, despite many manufacturers with cheaper lower-tier smartphones introducing the technology. The RAW...

vivo S7 render reveals camera design, it is similar to the X50 Pro

Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:01 PM PDT

The vivo S7 announcement is scheduled for Monday, and today the manufacturer gave us another teaser, revealing the camera setup and one of the colors, and they both look intriguing. The S7 will sport a similar setup to the vivo X50 Pro - one main cam with a big lens in the upper side of a rectangle setup, accompanied by two auxiliary shooters. The big difference is we don't see a periscope cam, but the S series leans to the mid-tier price range, so it's not really a surprise. The color looks interesting, but it is hardly a surprise anymore - we've seen numerous different gradients...

The Watch3 in this video is a Mystic Bronze 41mm version with model number SM-R850. Around the 1-minute mark, the host speculates the possibility of the...

The display will support 120Hz refresh rates for smooth animations and high frame-rate gaming, while a 270Hz touch refresh rate digitizer ensures optimal touch response. The teaser also reveals a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with support for MEMC 3.0, which interpolates additional frames in any regular video, thus giving it the appearance that it is of a higher frame rate. This kind of...

The Asus ROG Phone 3 has a hidden 160Hz display mode

Posted: 27 Jul 2020 02:02 PM PDT

The Asus ROG Phone 3 has a lovely 6.59-inch AMOLED panel with a joint-fastest refresh rate of 144Hz on a phone. It turns out, the panel can run even faster - up to 160Hz to be exact. The guys over at XDA-Developers found an Android Debug Bridge command that enables the ROG Phone 3's panel to run at an experimental 160Hz for testing and everyone with basic ADB knowledge can enable it (instructions in the source link below). XDA has confirmed that the screen does indeed run at 160Hz and that some games, capable of 144fps, being technically fps-unlocked, can run at 160fps. We verified in...

Xiaomi device with Snapdragon 865 crushes AnTuTu, is it the Mi 10 Pro Plus?

Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:33 AM PDT

A mystery Xiaomi device with the model number M2007J1SC managed to score 687,000 on AnTuTu. To put that into perspective, in our testing the highest scorer on AnTuTu is the Asus ROG Phone 3 with X Mode enabled and with an active cooling fan strapped on and it only got 621,000. According to the source of the leak, the Xiaomi device in question is running a Snapdragon 865, and not the overclocked Snapdragon 865+ chipset. Benchmarks typically can't tell the two chipsets apart though because they share an identifier so we wouldn't read too much into this. The question is - which device is...

Galaxy M01 Core unveiled: the cheapest Samsung in India, running Android 10 Go edition

Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:21 AM PDT

In the last 60 days, Samsung has launched three phones in India that cost under INR 10,000. The last of which is the new Galaxy M01 Core, an Android 10 Go edition phone and the cheapest Samsung in the country – it starts at INR 5,500. However, it's quite a bit different from the Galaxy M01 and even M01s. For starters, it's smaller – the Core has a 5.3" screen compared to 5.7" on the vanilla M01 and 6.2" on the M01s. The screen has 720p+ resolution, which is alright in this case as it works out to 277 ppi pixel density. Also, previous Core models had sub-HD screens, so again, not bad for...

The OnePlus Nord cracks during bend test

Posted: 27 Jul 2020 09:17 AM PDT

The newly-announced OnePlus Nord is cheaper than the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro and as such, it has made some compromises with materials and components. It uses a less-powerful Snapdragon 765G chipset, has a slightly-smaller display, no telephoto camera and a plastic frame. The last one is the biggest differentiator to the metal-framed OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro when it comes to durability. The plastic frame cracked during JerryRigEverything's routine bend test. The frame's least structurally-sound spot appears to be, like on so many other devices, right underneath the volume rocker. The rest of...
