Flashback: the phone that was a tablet that was a laptop that failed

Posted: 12 Jul 2020 05:25 AM PDT

At CES 2011 Asus unveiled the EEE Pad Transformer TF101 – a tablet that could transform into a small laptop thanks to the optional keyboard dock. This was nearly a decade before Apple decided to do the same with the Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro. But Asus' ambitions were much greater than a simple 2-in-1, it was going to create the only computing gadget you'll ever need. This came only a year later – enter the Asus PadFone. The name isn't subtle, it's a phone that can turn into a tablet using the appropriate tablet dock. And that tablet could attach to a keyboard dock, much like the...

Weekly poll: is the Poco M2 Pro something you want or has the brand lost its way?

Posted: 12 Jul 2020 02:13 AM PDT

When the Poco brand was born, it had the reputation of a flagship killer. And while the F2 Pro is keeping that spirit alive, it costs more than its predecessor. The mid-range Poco X2 is keeping the price low, even if it can't kill any flagships. But now there's an even cheaper option. The Poco M2 Pro will become available in India next week starting at CNY 14,000. The X2 goes for around INR 17,500, the F2 Pro isn't available there yet but is one of the most affordable Snapdragon 865 phones out there (it still costs more than double the X2 price, though). In August last year you could have...

Sony Xperia 1 II battery life

Posted: 11 Jul 2020 10:59 PM PDT

We reviewed the Sony Xperia 1 II a little over a month ago and we enjoyed it for its camera prowess and extensive feature set, among other things. What we couldn't do at that time was test its battery life as the firmware we had running during the review wasn't finalized in that particular respect. Now that we got the retail-grade software we were finally able to run the tests. The numbers we got out of the Xperia 1 II are better than what we clocked on the previous generation, though it's not a huge difference. We measured 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing, up from the Xperia 1's 9 hours and...

Weekly poll results: the upgrade cycle extends as people keep their old phones longer

Posted: 11 Jul 2020 07:49 PM PDT

When we asked you two years ago, every other person said they keep their phone for two years before buying a new one. Last week we asked the same thing, but got a very different answer. The two-year upgrade cycle is still quite popular, 1 in 3 practice it, but it ended up in second place by the slimmest margin. Most people now hope to keep their phone for three years. It seems that once you find a phone you are happy with, there's no strong urge to pay more money for the latest and greatest. Part of that is due to rising prices, smartphone trends play a part in it as well (many are still...

Skagen Falster 3 X by KYGO smartwatch review

Posted: 11 Jul 2020 04:22 PM PDT

Introduction Skagen is a Danish lifestyle brand that's been making watches for 30 years. Though the brand finds itself under the Fossil Group of watch brands - it brings a unique style. Skagen's watches are regarded as minimal, yet stylish and functional. This is exactly how I'd describe the Skagen Falster 3 smartwatch. The latest edition of the watch is in partnership with premium audio lifestyle brand X by KYGO. Unique to this edition is the matte black wrist strap and watch body. The wrist strap carries the KYGO "X" and you get some exclusive watch faces. The Falster's overall...

Realme Buds Q review

Posted: 11 Jul 2020 02:12 PM PDT

Realme introduced its first TWS earphones Buds Air at the end of 2019 and when we reviewed them, we found them to be unrivaled in terms of value for money. Now the company also has another true wireless set - Realme Buds Q. Already selling in China, India, and Europe, we decided to give them a go and see if they really are as good as they look or if the company cut too many corners to make the €30 price tag. Our unit is in Quite Black color which has yellow accents but they become hidden once the earbud is plugged into your ear. Unlike the Buds Air, the Buds Q are bean-shaped with...

Fitbit Charge 4 gets Dynamic GPS, Smart Wake alarms with the latest update

Posted: 11 Jul 2020 12:20 PM PDT

Fitbit has released a new software update for the Charge 4 fitness band which brings along a couple of useful features. The first one's Dynamic GPS, which allows Charge 4 to use the paired smartphone's GPS sensor if it's nearby to capture route and pace among other stats. This should help save the battery on Charge 4 since it won't use its built-in GPS when you are carrying your phone with you. The second feature is Smart Wake in the Alarms app which avoids waking you during your deep sleep and finds the best time 30 minutes before the set alarm time to wake you up. This is to...

Samsung Galaxy A01 Core certified by Thailand's NBTC

Posted: 11 Jul 2020 10:10 AM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy A01 Core was first seen late last month in the Google Play Console and in Bluetooth SIG certification documents. We then caught a glimpse of some official-looking renders. We're now learning it has also been approved by the NBTC, Thailand's telecom regulator. Samsung Galaxy A01 Core at the NBTC As usual, the NBTC database entry doesn't reveal much about the specifications of the phone other than the fact that it's a dual SIM device - as evidenced by the 'DS' in the model name, same as in the Bluetooth listing. From the previous reports we know that it will be...

Foxcomm may be looking to invest $1 billion in an existing factory in India, sources cited by Reuters state. The expansion of the plant near Sriperumbudur will take three years to complete and will result in the opening of 6,000 new jobs. iPhone XR (right) will be joined by other models once the factory gets expanded Apple's requested that Foxconn shift some of the iPhone's production outside of China in order to be more flexible in the event of an escalation of the US-China trade conflict, the sources say.
