Week 23 in review: Three vivo X50 phones, two Honor Play 4, and 43" Nokia TV are official

Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:19 AM PDT

The past seven days saw plenty of new phones - vivo launched a trio of phones with unique cameras, while Honor brought the Play gaming lineup to life. On the rumor side it was mostly the Galaxy Note20+ - the latest leak suggested the device will adopt the 108 MP sensor, seen in the Galaxy S20 Ultra, but it will drop the 100X Space Zoom and will limit itself to "just" 50X zoom. Leaks are also going strong on the OnePlus Z, the upcoming ROG Phone III and the iPad Air 4. Xiaomi is about to launch the Mi Band 5 next week - we have a specific date to mark on our calendars now. One...

Weekly poll: the three vivo X50 phones take different paths to your heart

Posted: 07 Jun 2020 03:33 AM PDT

vivo announced three X50 phones this week and they are all aimed at different applications - so which one of the three (if any) would be your pick for your next phone? The vivo X50 Pro got the most runtime in ads thanks to its unique gimbal camera. It's instantly recognizable too with the way it "looks around". It's a next generation optical image stabilization system, which is paired with a 48MP Sony IMX598 sensor. The other cameras are an 8MP periscope (5x optical zoom), 13MP portrait cam (2x zoom) and 8MP ultrawide shooter. This phone is powered by the Snapdragon 765G, making it...

Weekly poll results: Realme X3 SuperZoom gets a lukewarm reception

Posted: 06 Jun 2020 11:17 PM PDT

Last week's poll shows that people are not sold on the Realme X3 SuperZoom - the voting results lean towards "no", though there is no definitive answer on whether or not the phone is worth it at €500. And this is €500 for the model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB storage, mind you as there are no other memory options. In the comments, one of the most common responses was that people prefer Realme's other Snapdragon 855+ phone, the X2 Pro. An AMOLED screen (without the dual punch hole), 3.5mm headphone jack and faster charging seem to outweigh the periscope zoom lens. The X2 Pro also...

Flashback: (Sony) Ericsson T68 and the add-on camera that made it famous

Posted: 06 Jun 2020 07:33 PM PDT

The T68 was essentially the last phone released under the Ericsson brand. In fact, a few months later it was re-released as the Sony Ericsson T68i with only small cosmetic changes on the outside and a software update (which was available to the older models as well). It marked a few firsts for Ericsson - its first phone with a color screen, first with an internal antenna. It wasn't the first to support a camera, but it was the first Ericsson to work well enough for people to actually remember. It was an add-on camera, the MCA-25 CommuniCam. It had a VGA sensor (640 x 480px) and...

Dropbox Passwords is a password manager from Dropbox

Posted: 06 Jun 2020 11:35 AM PDT

Dropbox has come up with a password manager and clearly not a big chunk of the budget has gone into finding a name for it - it's called Dropbox Passwords. The app is now available on the Play Store, though it's listed as Early Access and while you can freely download it, actually using it requires an invite. The description in the Play Store makes it sound like every other password manager - it'll remember your passwords, sign you in to websites, and feature cross-device syncing. Your passwords will be protected by zero-knowledge encryption too, meaning Passwords itself will store them...

Oppo confirms a smart TV is on the roadmap as it celebrates 1 year of 5G in China

Posted: 06 Jun 2020 09:40 AM PDT

Oppo has been rumored to be developing a smart TV at least since Christmas and we now have some concrete proof of those plans. On its official Weibo page, the company published an infographic celebrating 1 year of commercial 5G efforts in China. We thought that it was 1 November last year when that kicked off, but Oppo may have something else in mind and even so that little discrepancy is beside the point. Down at the very bottom of the rather long image, there's a stylized depiction of a TV in a grid of pictured existing products. Oppo infographic chopped into more...
