Flashback: Palm Pre showed us the way to the future then faded to obscurity

How the mighty have fallen - before it was acquired and snuffed out by HP, Palm was known for popularizing Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), an ancestor to the modern smartphone. And before webOS was the software powering LG TVs, it was the best touch operating system for smartphones. The Palm Pre and webOS made their debut in June of 2009 when iOS and Android were still relatively young. Both the phone and its platform introduced features that are still in use today, even if people rarely remember the pioneers. Palm Pre The pebble-shaped handset was fairly compact and...

The new phones and tablets of the week

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 04:19 AM PDT

These last seven days were filled with high profile announcements - we had an Apple phone, two new OnePlus flagships, three devices from Honor, flip-phone from LG and a renamed Honor midranger. There were even Bluetooth earphones - here's a quick summary, in case you missed any of the launches. First, we're starting with the Apple iPhone SE (2020) - this name is so influential, we were hearing rumors about a second SE pretty much since the first one was announced in 2016 (how the time flies). But despite the name this is essentially an iPhone 8 with its TouchID home button and classic...

Weekly poll: have the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro lost what made the brand special?

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 01:10 AM PDT

It's a story as old as time - or as old as the concept of "flagship killers" at least. OnePlus may have gotten its start by offering more for less, but its phones changed gradually over the years, which brings us to today. The OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro can't be called flagship killers. That title hasn't applied to the company's phones for a couple of generations now, but they still offered great value for money. Today we ask you if that's still true. The OnePlus 8 Pro starts at $900/€900/£800. That's the MSRP of the Galaxy S20 5G, for example, but even two minutes of shopping around will...

LG doesn't go quite as hard with the spec sheet as others like Samsung and Oppo, but it also doesn't go as hard with the price point.

Weekly poll results: phone usage has gone up during the quarantine

Posted: 18 Apr 2020 06:43 PM PDT

Last week's poll shows that the quarantine has lead to people spending more time on their phones - but mostly for entertainment. There's also a strong contingent of PC and laptop users while tablets... well, it seems that no one uses those. Just under a third of voters say that they use their phone for both work and entertainment now that they are stuck at home. For some that's all they have as they haven't needed a PC at home until now. And some raised an interesting question - will this experience affect your upgrade plans to get something more capable? The majority of the vote went...

We now have the Honor MagicBook 14 for a review and we are about to see if its real-life performance matches the excellent value for money promised by its specs sheet.
