Samsung is working on its own version of Apple's Deep Fusion feature

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 08:05 AM PDT

Apple announced the so-called "Deep Fusion" feature on its iPhone 11-series smartphones the other day, promising excellent photos thanks to an advanced machine-learning algorithm. Details were scarce but it sounded a lot like Google Pixel's HDR+. And according to the latest rumors, Samsung is working on a version of its own. Samsung is also developing the "Deep Fusion"function similar to the iPhone 11 Pro, and really plays the role of the NPU in taking pictures and videos. We can look forward to the Galaxy S11.— Ice universe (@UniverseIce) September 12, 2019 Ice Universe is a renown...

Counterpoint: Samsung solidifies its leadership in Central and Eastern Europe

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 07:00 AM PDT

According to Counterpoint's latest market research, Samsung is doing exceptionally well in Central and Eastern Europe. The Korean giant recorded 21% year-on-year growth in smartphone shipments in the region and 8% quarter-on-quarter. These figures put Samsung in a favorable market position with a whopping 40% market share, which is also twice as big as its nearest competitor Huawei. The main reason for Samsung's success in this part of Europe is the successful launch of the Galaxy A-series earlier this year, which accounts for 70% of the maker's shipments. Moreover, the imposed...

Some Android 10 phones are getting Dark mode for the Google Play Store

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 06:05 AM PDT

Google has been hard at work adding dark mode to its core apps. The latest to get it is the Play Store. This is based on the new features of Android 10, which started rolling out to Pixels just over a week ago (also, betas are available for a few non-Google phones). Those of you still running Pie are stuck with the bright white background for now. Note that this seems to be a staged rollout so even if you are one of the few lucky ones to already by running Android 10, you may have to wait a bit longer for the Store's dark mode to become available. Google Play Store's new dark...

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 04:05 AM PDT

With Android 10 out, manufacturers are now announcing upgrade roadmaps for their devices and even though Xiaomi still hasn't confirmed the full list of its devices to get the latest iteration of Android, the support team promised an OTA update for the Mi 9T sooner than expected. According to Ausdroid, the company has confirmed that the Xiaomi Mi 9T or also known as Redmi K20 in some regions, will be getting the latest Android 10 update as soon as next month. It definitely looks plausible given that the beta version of Xiaomi's MIUI based on Android 10 has been out for a while now so...

Huawei Mate 30 Pro photo offers a close look at its waterfall screen, new face recognition hardware

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 03:03 AM PDT

Someone got a Huawei Mate 30 Pro unit early. The white plastic is used to hide the design, but it doesn't do a very good job - the thing to notice here is the curvature of the screen and the new notch hardware. Huawei Mate 30 Pro The Mate 30 Pro has what the Internet has been calling a "waterfall screen", the left and right side curve 90°, much more than a typical screen with curved sides. Perhaps, EMUI will use these for gestures or other tricks (remember when the Galaxy Edge emulated a side-mounted shutter button?). Good palm rejection is a must, however. The notch has been...

Alleged iPhone 11 Pro shows up on Geekbench with 4GB of RAM

Posted: 11 Sep 2019 11:54 PM PDT

An alleged iPhone 11 Pro has popped up on Geekbench, sporting an Apple A13 Bionic hexa-core chip and iOS 13. What's more interesting is the listed 4GB of RAM, which would put the iPhone 11 Pro on the same level as the iPhone XS and way behind current Android opposition. As Geekbench is a CPU benchmark, RAM wasn't an issue in the iPhone 11 Pro's decimation of all Android competition. The phone scored 5,472 in single-core and 13,769 in multi-core, which puts it head and shoulders above any smartphone. In our fresh ASUS ROG Phone II review we put the Snapdragon 855+ chipset against...

Sony Xperia 1 update brings much needed camera stability improvements

Posted: 11 Sep 2019 08:00 PM PDT

Sony's Xperia 1 is now receiving a new software update. It's not a big one, but it might be important because it promises to improve picture quality and zoom framing for the camera, as well as deliver a more optimized camera interface and a more stable shooting experience overall. All of this has been a long time coming and there was definitely a need for more stability and reliability in the camera's performance. Additionally, Bluetooth connections to headsets should be more stable, and there are some power management enhancements too - so maybe you'll get a teeny tiny bit more...

T-Mobile's Samsung Galaxy S8 Active finally gets Android 9 Pie

Posted: 11 Sep 2019 06:00 PM PDT

T-Mobile and Samsung have finally started sending out the update to Android 9 Pie for the magenta carrier's version of the Galaxy S8 Active. Late? Definitely. Not just considering that Google has already released Android 10 for its Pixel smartphones, but T-Mobile's own non-Active Galaxy S8 got to taste Pie nearly six months ago. Anyway, it is what it is. Unfortunately the Active models have always lagged behind in software updates, so it's probably best to focus on the fact that Pie is finally here for T-Mobile's S8 Active. The update arrives over-the-air as a 1.6GB download. Upon...

Two new, extensive hands-on videos of the Google Pixel 4 leak

Posted: 11 Sep 2019 02:58 PM PDT

The Pixel 4 leaks are landing multiple times a day right now, and surely that's all coincidental and nothing to do with the fact that Apple unveiled some new iPhones yesterday. This time around we get not one but two detailed hands-on videos of Google's upcoming phones. The first one only shows the white model, but the second one has the black and orange hues too. Interestingly, the frame is black no matter what color you pick. That makes for a 'panda' look with the white one, and a really strange look for the orange version. Anyway, neither video is in English, be warned. Still,...

The resolution is likely to stay at 720p+, however. The phone also gains a fingerprint reader on the back. Apple's iPhone 11 launch fails to impress Asian markets

Posted: 11 Sep 2019 09:00 AM PDT

Asian markets woke up to a brand new phones from Apple, but the iPhone 11 has failed to excite locals, which are used to getting feature-packed phones on a budget. Apple lower price for its entry level model, from the $750 iPhone XR to $700 for the iPhone 11, caused some discussion but analysts are skeptical. They believe this move aims to recapture lost ground in China, where Apple's market share has been slipping in recent quarters as people flock to Huawei phones (partly to support the home-grown brand in the midst of the US trade war, but also because of pricing considerations). The...

More countries and Samsung devices (including tablets) will be supported soon. PlayGalaxy can stream a game running on your PC to your phone, so you can play locally (over Wi-Fi) or while on the go (4G works, but 5G's lower latency will be better here).
