Xiaomi's foldable phone will have a triple camera, EUIPO filing reveals Posted: 13 Aug 2019 07:00 AM PDT Xiaomi has filed a design for its foldable phone with the EU Intellectual Property Office. The technical drawings show the familiar dual-fold design but also reveal a triple camera on the back. How will that work? Official design schematic of Xiaomi's foldable phone Xiaomi posted two videos of the phone. They show how the phone is divided into three segments - the left and right segment fold behind the center segment. And in doing so, they will cover the camera on the back. That isn't shown in the video, but there's no other way this will work. It will be hard to spin this as... |
Samsung Galaxy A30s and A50s certified by Wi-Fi Alliance Posted: 13 Aug 2019 06:15 AM PDT With the official announcement of the Galaxy A10s yesterday it's evident that Samsung's strategy for the A-series going forward will bring "S" upgrades to its popular devices about six months after their release. The Galaxy A30s and A50s appear to be next in line for this strategy as they just popped up on the Wi-Fi alliance site bearing the SM-A307FN/DS and SM-A507FN/DS model numbers. Samsung Galaxy A30s and A50s Wi-Fi certifications While we don't get much details about the devices apart from them running Android 9 Pie and having dual-band Wi-Fi capabilities, we have previous... |
Samsung Galaxy Note10+'s 25W charger aces charge speed test, beats OnePlus 7 Pro Posted: 13 Aug 2019 05:30 AM PDT There was some grumbling that Samsung didn't bundle a 45W charger with the Galaxy Note10+, even though the phone supports it. Instead, you get a 25W charger in the box - and as it turns out, this is still enough to beat the competition from 0% to 100% battery charge. YouTube channel Gadgets Portal pitted the Galaxy Note10+ (4,300mAh) against the Note9 (4,000mAh, 15W charger in box), OnePlus 7 Pro (4,000mAh, 30W charger) and Apple iPhone XS Max (3,174mAh, 5W charger). You can watch the video first or read on below it for spoilers. The Galaxy Note10+ finished charging in 1 hour and 5... |
Huawei's 5G modem is larger and less efficient than Qualcomm's, a teardown reveals Posted: 13 Aug 2019 04:45 AM PDT IHS Markit has done some extensive research on early 5G adoption using six early 5G-capable smartphones and looked inside. The teardowns revealed that Huawei ended up with a larger, less efficient and more expensive 5G chip than the competition. Since the Kirin 980 chipset comes equipped with a 4G/3G/2G modem of its own, the Balong 5000 5G modem is added externally leaving the original 4G modem unused and taking a lot of space. Having two modem chips on the SoC is not only ineffective in terms of energy and space, it's also costlier. Not to mention that the Balong 5000 on its own... |
Samsung looking to deliver a graphene battery smartphone within two years Posted: 13 Aug 2019 04:00 AM PDT When Samsung introduced a battery technology using graphene to make lithium-ion batteries last longer, everyone was praising and welcoming the future, despite the astronomical cost of production, which made it unfeasible in mass produced devices. According to Evan Blass, the Korean giant is actually on the verge of unveiling a device with a graphene battery "either next year or 2021". Graphene, as a material, is highly conductive and elastic, touted as the future since its discovery as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries back in 2004. It is a form of carbon that can be... |

The social giant already started working on Dark Mode for Watch, but reverse engineering expert Jane Wong - who has previously uncovered under-development features of Facebook and Instagram - reports that the company has started implementing this much-requested feature across the entire app. Facebook is still working on Dark Mode for its main app and it's going to be a while before the company makes the feature public. There were also the trademarked monikers V60S and K50S, so we might be looking at four new devices. Now, a fifth model appeared in Korean media - LG V50s ThinQ, but that's actually a renamed LG G8X for the domestic market of the company. Xiaomi is teasing something Redmi K20-related for August 16 Posted: 12 Aug 2019 08:00 PM PDT Xiaomi's sub-brand Redmi took the mobile world by storm earlier this year when it unveiled the K20 series, with the K20 Pro being the first ever true flagship smartphone to bear the Redmi branding. The family has seen its fair share of backlash in India in the meantime, which has to do with pricing, but overall the K20 line seems to have been quite the success. With all that in mind, get ready for something new that's Redmi K20-related to come on August 16. Xiaomi's sub-brand is teasing as much through its Chinese social media channels, although aside from the date there aren't a lot of... |
LG V35 ThinQ is now just $399.99 Posted: 12 Aug 2019 05:30 PM PDT LG's G8X might be on the way, but if you don't mind living with a slightly older flagship from the Korean company, Amazon is now holding a sale on the V35 ThinQ. This phone's recommended retail price is $899.99, but you can grab one currently for only $399.99. That's a whopping $500 off and a great value, if you don't mind the associated caveat. That is the fact that this is a Prime Exclusive device, so you have to be an Amazon Prime member to get it at this price. That means you'll have to live with a "pre-installed selection of Amazon apps", including the Amazon Widget, Amazon Shopping,... |
Samsung Galaxy A90 gets certified in Korea, 5G version in tow Posted: 12 Aug 2019 03:00 PM PDT The upcoming Samsung Galaxy A90 5G received Bluetooth certification a couple of days ago and today it has also approved by the Korea National Radio Research Agency (NRRA). The certification lists the SM-A908N, which points to the 5G variant. There's also an SM-A908B, presumably the 4G model. Both the 5G and 4G Galaxy A90 will be powered by the flagship Snapdragon 855 chipset paired to 6GB of RAM. Both are expected to have a 6.7-inch Infinity-U Super AMOLED display of FHD+ resolution. We expect the 5G and 4G models to differ in the camera department - the first should have a... |
LG trademarks V60S and K50S names ahead of IFA Posted: 12 Aug 2019 01:00 PM PDT The LG G8S ThinQ was released months after the regular G8 and it's a slight downgrade. It has a slightly larger screen 6.2" vs. 6.1", but with 1080p resolution. And while it gained stereo speakers, battery charging support took a small step back. The camera setup features both upgrades and downgrades. Here's the head to head comparison. The LG V30S was a clear upgrade over the V30 (though a minor one). The "S" naming scheme doesn't strictly mean an upgrade, but isn't necessarily a downgrade either. So, with two more "S" phones on the way - LG V60S and LG K50S - it's not clear what to... |

If you do want to select the mode manually, DCI-P3 Natural is achieves an Absolute color accuracy... |

Samsung, spearheaded by its revamped A series of phones, shipped 18.3m phones - up from Q2 of 2018's 15.3m. Despite its US-related woes Huawei still managed to retain the second spot with 8.5m shipped phones, but was still down compared to 2018 Q2's 10.1m. Apple was third thanks to iPhone XR and its 1.8m shipped units. Yet, while in 2018 it shipped nearly three times as many units as the fourth placed Xiaomi it's... |
