Stand-alone controllers for Google Stadia now available for pre-order

Posted: 18 Jun 2019 07:45 AM PDT

The "Founder's edition" pre-order bundle for Google's Stadia includes a Chromecast Ultra along with the controller and costs $130. Now you can get just the controller on its own in one of three colors. You may still want to get the full bundle even you already have the Chromecast, though. The controller alone is $70, so you're saving $60 - that's how much the Chromecast Ultra costs. However, the bundle comes with 3 months of Stadia Pro (normally $10 a month) and a Buddy Pass to invite a friend. The free tier of Stadia will not be available until 2020, so you can't use that to test the...

Pixel 4 to have a taller screen, Pixel 4 XL to stay about the same, new report claims

Posted: 18 Jun 2019 07:00 AM PDT

Google responded to the leaked renders of the Pixel 4 by revealing the design of the back, confirming the square dual camera. But the rumors do not end there - @OnLeaks just revealed the likely dimensions of the new Google flagship. The small Pixel 4 will sport a 5.6-5.8" screen, up from Pixel 3's 5.5" screen. Note that this is likely due to a taller aspect ratio as the phone won't be any wider - it should measure 147.0 x 68.9 x 8.2mm. The larger Pixel 4 XL will have a 6.2-6.4" screen, so it should be nearly identical to the 6.3" 18.5:9 screen of the current model. The XL phone will...

Samsung Galaxy Note10 screen protectors show centered punch hole

Posted: 18 Jun 2019 06:00 AM PDT

After we got to see some Galaxy Note10 Pro case images yesterday, now we have screen protectors for the upcoming Galaxy Note10 and 10 Pro. Previous renders already showed that Samsung is gearing up to ditch the top corner side cutout design of the S10 series and move the selfie camera in the center of the top. Noted tipster Ice Universe also posted a few Note10 screen protectors which don't feature the cutout for the selfie camera. Either way, given the Note10's presumed ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner the protectors will have to be specially designed for the Note10 in...

Posted: 18 Jun 2019 03:45 AM PDT

To say that the OnePlus 7 Pro is a success in China would be an understatement. The phone is enjoying the limelight and is apparently outselling rival Samsung Galaxy S10+ on Chinese soil by a factor of ten. According to sales data from popular online retailer JD.com, OnePlus sold 250,372 units while Samsung only managed to ship 23,266 units of its flagship. The obvious difference in price between the two handsets surely comes into play here as the OnePlus 7 Pro is CNY 2,490 ($359) cheaper than the S10+ even though it boasts 256GB storage compared to the 128GB on the Samsung flagship....

LG Stylo 5 image surfaces ahead of alleged July 15 launch

Posted: 18 Jun 2019 01:30 AM PDT

LG launched the Stylo 4 last June, and it seems the company will soon follow up with a successor - the Stylo 5 - as an official-looking press image has surfaced online. As you can see, the Stylo 5 looks identical to its predecessor. In fact, the only discernible difference between these two smartphones is that the primary camera and LED flash are now put together on the Stylo 5, instead of being placed separately as they were on the Stylo 4. Other than that, the Stylo 5, like its predecessor, has the fingerprint scanner on its back, with the power button on the right and volume rocker...

Google will offer opt-in RCS regardless of carrier, coming to the UK and France this month

Posted: 17 Jun 2019 10:00 PM PDT

Over the past couple of years, Google has taken it upon itself to help carriers develop the next generation of SMS known as Rich Communication Services, or just RCS. Of course, for RCS to work across carriers and across borders, each individual carrier must decide carrier interoperability and which devices are compatible. The reality is there are carrier politics and rules that have made progress on RCS slow to a crawl. As first reported by The Verge Google is now making the final push for RCS to become a useful reality. Android users in the UK and France will be able to opt-in to use RCS...

Xiaomi makes fun of notches in new series of promo videos

Posted: 17 Jun 2019 08:30 PM PDT

Xiaomi has unveiled the Mi 9T last week for international markets, and while it's nothing but a rebranded Redmi K20, that doesn't mean it's not a very interesting upper-midrange offering, what with its notch-less display and pop-up selfie camera. The Chinese company is focusing on exactly that in a new series of three video promos for the phone that are all about dissing the notch. Each episode explores how ridiculous a notch would look like in other settings. Here's what happens at a hairdresser's: At a dentist: And weirdest of all, a make-up session gone...

Taiwanese TPK Holding reportedly backs out of Japan Display bailout deal

Posted: 17 Jun 2019 04:00 PM PDT

Back in February, Japan Display (JDI) was reportedly on track to receive upwards of $700 million in funding from Taiwanese panel maker TPK Holding and the Chinese Silk Road Fund for its OLED production line. An estimated $230 million of that sum was supposed to come from the Taiwanese conglomerate but now Reuters is reporting that the deal is no longer happening. This blow comes just as JDI was on the verge of losing its number two spot globally. JDI remains Apple's main supplier of LCD panels but its late entry to the OLED market nearly put the company out of business as Apple devices...

Xiaomi trolls OnePlus once again as Redmi K20 Pro prepares to launch in India

Posted: 17 Jun 2019 02:30 PM PDT

The Redmi K20 and K20 Pro will arrive in India on July 15 (and they'll keep their names). To build anticipation, Xiaomi's promo campaign starts as it did last year - by trolling OnePlus. Remember the "Do the ma+h" gift bags with a calculator? This year it's about numbers too, specifically the AnTuTu score. A few days ago the @RedmiIndia account tweeted "Somebody jus+ announced the world's fastest phone" (the "+" instead of "t" makes it clear who is the target of this dig). The company also promised to beat that, saying "hold my AnTuTu". And today Redmi delivers the second punch - Redmi K20...

Posted: 17 Jun 2019 01:00 PM PDT

Kuo expects that there will be two premium iPhones - a 5.4-inch OLED and a 6.7-inch OLED, both with 5G - and the third will be an iPhone XR successor with a 6.1-inch OLED that will max out at LTE. This means Apple will finally address the needs of the fans who've been clamoring for a smaller premium iPhone - the current iPhone XS has a 5.8-inch display and weighs nearly 180g. Moving to a 5.4-inch diagonal would result in a...
