Week 21 in review: Huawei hit hard by USA-China trade war

Posted: 26 May 2019 07:00 AM PDT

This week politics spilled over into the world of technology quite suddenly and somewhat unexpectedly. Last week the US put Chinese Huawei on a ban list and this week we felt the consequences as Google suspended Huawei's license to use Android. Google later revoked the ban for 90 days but that still doesn't give Huawei a real way of using its Android. The issues get further complicated. A trade war encompasses a huge spectrum of businesses and the US has a huge network of partners. UK-based chip design giant ARM had to cut ties with Huawei, effectively ending the Chinese company's Kirin...

Weekly poll: are you sticking with Huawei or Honor?

Posted: 26 May 2019 03:00 AM PDT

Huawei is in big trouble - between losing its Android license and getting cut off by ARM, the company's smartphone business is in limbo. It is trying to fight back against the ban, but right now its future looks grim. This isn't just bad for Huawei, but for consumers too. And we don't just mean the loss of competition. If you currently have a Huawei or an Honor phone, it just lost much of its resale value. And even if you weren't planning on selling it, it won't get the next major OS upgrade, meaning you may have to get a new phone sooner. If last week you were looking to buy, say, a...

Asus Zenfone 6 in for review

Posted: 25 May 2019 11:00 PM PDT

Is Asus the new OnePlus? The Zenfone 6 will launch at €500, a price point that OnePlus hasn't hit since the 5T. Not to mention that it offers features that fans have been clamoring for. Yes, there's a microSD slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a huge battery (5,000mAh), a notification LED too. All those are things that major players - Apple, Huawei and Google - have "outgrown" in their flagships, only Samsung seems to be holding down the fort. And Asus. Even mostly pure Android - not One as Asus wanted to include some value-added features, but still free of the burden of a heavy skin....

Weekly poll results: OnePlus 7 Pro splits fans' opinions

Posted: 25 May 2019 07:00 PM PDT

OnePlus built its reputation by making near-flagship phones and selling them at half flagship prices. Simple math would tell you that's a lot of value for money. However, starting with the OnePlus 7 Pro the equation has changed - it's a proper flagship at a full flagship price. And that has left fans with mixed emotions. In last week's poll there is a nearly even split between people who want the Pro and those who think there are better flagships out there. There's some good news for OnePlus - people like the Pro a lot more than they do the vanilla OnePlus 7 and relatively few think...
