Weekly poll: is the Nokia X71 (8.1 Plus) great value for money? Posted: 07 Apr 2019 06:00 AM PDT The Nokia X71 was unveiled in China this week and will most likely be available as the Nokia 8.1 Plus globally. It's HMD's first phone with a punch hole selfie camera and its first with a triple camera. Sure, the Nokia 9 PureView has five cameras, but they all have the same focal length so they're used almost exclusively for computational photography. They don't support ultra-wide or telephoto shots natively. This is what makes the X71 interesting - with a 48MP main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide module and a depth sensor, this could be the Nokia with the most versatile camera setup yet. The...
Apple Watch saves a man's life Posted: 07 Apr 2019 03:00 AM PDT Someone posted in the /r/Apple subreddit an interesting story how his Apple Watch saved his life. It appears that the hear rate notification warned him right before things went "nuts". I was laying in bed, enjoying some TV and homemade brisket, when my Apple Watch told me that my heart rate was weird af, and then, told me my heart rate was stupid fast (thank you heart rate alerts) Called ER, when they arrived, they found me in serious trouble. Body went into shock, got rushed to the hospital in a stretcher, and got taken into trauma. I felt totally fine before everything happened,...
Weekly poll results: Huawei P30 Pro is adored, P30 gets overlooked Posted: 07 Apr 2019 12:00 AM PDT The rear camera setup on the Huawei P30 Pro takes the best photos of any mobile camera, whether it's shooting in the dark or faraway subjects. And it's this superiority that led to a very positive vote in last week's poll. The triple camera is miles ahead of the competition in terms of telephoto camera and low-light photography, the ultra-wide camera is excellent as well (and it shoots great macros). Any one of these would have been impressive on its own, but to have all three on board means the P30 Pro is the unchallenged photography king. As a flagship phone, however, it's not...
Counterclockwise: naming things is hard, so every new phone is called the "One" Posted: 06 Apr 2019 08:00 PM PDT People made many jokes when Microsoft named its third-gen console the "Xbox One". It doesn't make much sense for the third product in the line, but it gets worse - "one" could be the most overused name for a tech product ever. For example, Microsoft OneDrive is a cloud storage service, so is Google One. But don't confuse it with Android One, that's something completely different. And, of course, there is a long list of Android phones named "One". HTC One OnePlus One XOLO One Motorola One Sony Xperia 1 Realme 1 Nokia 1 Microsoft Kin One We didn't...
Android Q will come with native support for 3D Touch-like feature called "deep press" Posted: 06 Apr 2019 12:00 PM PDT According to Android Q documentation, the next big Android OS will natively support a feature called "deep press" or also known as Force Touch or 3D Touch in iOS language. By the looks of it, it will be exactly what it sounds - an enhanced functionality tied with a pressure-sensitive screen. So far there have been a couple of custom implementations of the feature, but Android Q will bring native support for it. It's still unknown how it will work and how it will be implemented in this year's Android iteration. We don't even know if additional hardware will be required under the...
YouTube PiP mode rolling out to non-Premium users outside the US Posted: 06 Apr 2019 10:00 AM PDT YouTube's picture-in-picture (PiP) mode was initially limited to Premium users, but that changed last June as the feature was extended to non-Premium users in the US. More than nine months later, the PiP mode is now spreading to non-Premium subscribers outside the US too. YouTube's PiP mode is currently rolling to non-Premium users in Italy, but if you happen to live in another country and have got this feature, let us know by dropping a comment below. The option to turn on PiP mode can be found in Settings > General menu in YouTube's Android app, but it only works on devices running...
A Samsung Galaxy S10 5G teardown video appears Posted: 06 Apr 2019 08:00 AM PDT The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G isn't out yet but one of the first, if not the first, teardown videos just popped up. It takes you through the whole process of disassembly and shows off all the internals of the phone so if you like hardware videos, go ahead and watch it. Of course, since the phone has a glass sandwich design, a heat gun is needed to loosen up the adhesive holding the back plate before prying it up. The first thing we see is the triple-camera module along with the 3D ToF sensor and the plate used for wireless charging. A couple of cables need to be removed before proceeding...
