Weekly poll: rear vs. selfie camera, which is more important? Posted: 21 Apr 2019 07:00 AM PDT This week we saw the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G claim the title of "Best selfie camera", at least according to DxOMark. The phone's rear camera matched the score of the Huawei P30 Pro, which previously ruled alone. This along with the results from last week's poll got us wondering about front and rear cameras - which one is more important to you? We're well past the era when phones had only one camera (and it was on the back), yet for one reason or another the rear camera is still treated as more important and gets the better hardware. There are exceptions, for example, the Realme U1, has a...

Samsung Galaxy Fold in for review Posted: 21 Apr 2019 03:00 AM PDT When we received an invitation to give the Samsung Galaxy Fold a try, we immediately jumped the plane and headed to Samsung's office. There, an Astro Blue unit was waiting for us, and we already shared our initial impressions of the device. Now however we have the phone at HQ and we are eager to put it through its paces and see where it fits in the bigger picture. The first thing you see when you open the box is the majestic 4:3 OLED screen in an unfolded manner. It is pretty much a standard 7.3" tablet which, thanks to Samsung, you can now put comfortably in your pocket. And when it...
Weekly poll results: Oppo Reno 10x zoom edges out Samsung Galaxy A80 Posted: 20 Apr 2019 11:00 PM PDT The Oppo Reno 10x zoom prevailed in last week's poll, beating the Samsung Galaxy A80 by a healthy margin. The rivalry between these two goes beyond selfie camera vs. rear camera, though these are clearly major parts of the phones' identities. The Oppo Reno 10x zoom will be only the second phone on the market to deliver a 160mm telephoto lens (same focal length as the P30 Pro, despite the possible confusion caused by the "x zoom" rating). Plus, people have more faith in the reliability of the shark fin pop-up selfie camera. A80's 48MP camera is used for selfies and normal photos ...
Counterclockwise: As 5G arrives we track the 3G and 4G adoption Posted: 20 Apr 2019 07:00 PM PDT With the dawn of 5G upon us, we wanted to look at how quickly new networks are adopted. The first 2G networks appeared in 1991 then the first commercial 3G networks came alive in 2001 (but wouldn't reach Europe and the US until 2003). We'll use the relative popularity of 2G-only phones, 3G-enabled phones and then 4G phones to gauge adoption. We'll look at the last 25 years - starting the chart at 1994. But keep in mind that the 1991-2003 period is essentially all 2G. Early 3G phones didn't take the world by storm - MMS was cool, no one used video calls and data plans were still too...
Promo video confirms notched display and UD fingerprint scanner on Lenovo Z6 Pro Posted: 20 Apr 2019 01:00 PM PDT The Lenovo Z6 Pro which is all set to be unveiled on April 23 has already appeared in a live image and a render showing off its back. Today, we get to see the fascia of this smartphone in a video. Previous leaks hinted at the Z6 Pro coming with a notchless display and a pop-up selfie camera, but the video we are looking at today puts an end to all those rumors and speculations and confirms that this smartphone will come with a waterdrop notch. This video also confirms the presence of an in-display fingerprint scanner on the Z6 Pro. In addition to the video, we are also looking at...
Alleged Snapdragon 735 detailed in internal document Posted: 20 Apr 2019 11:40 AM PDT Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 730 only a couple of weeks ago, but a 735 appears to on the timeline as well. What looks like an internal document details the future chipset's key specs. The chip will allegedly be built on a 7nm process like the current Snapdragon 855 top dog. It'll feature an octa-core CPU in a novel 1+1+6 core configuration - a middle ground between the 855's 2+2+4 and the 2+6 of the 730. Clock speeds are expected to be 1x2.9GHz + 1x2.4GHz + 6x1.8GHz and the Kryo 400-branded cores are likely going to be Cortex-A76 derivatives for the two main ones while the 6...
Redmi Y3 shown off in latest video Posted: 20 Apr 2019 08:30 AM PDT Xiaomi's sub-brand Redmi recently shared a video teasing the 4,000 mAh battery on the upcoming Redmi Y3. Now, the company has posted yet another teaser which reveals the phone's design. The video shows the textured back of the Y3 which is home to a dual camera and a fingerprint scanner. On the front, the smartphone has a waterdrop notch display which is surrounded by thin bezels on three sides, and a thicker chin. This video also shows the company putting the Redmi Y3 through an improvised tumble-down-the-stairs "durability challenge" to showcase how tough this selfie-centric smartphone...
