Counterclockwise: old tech repurposed Posted: 14 Apr 2019 05:00 AM PDT The infrared port was one of the first ways for a phone to share data locally with other devices. For example, you could sync the calendar from your PC to your PDA over IrDA. It fell out of favor after the bugs and compatibility issues of Bluetooth were ironed out, but IR lived on. It was repurposed as a remote control feature, allowing phones to command TVs, air conditioners, anything with an IR remote, really. Infrared communication is so simple that it never suffered from the compatibility woes of Bluetooth. If anything, today's smart devices are a crapshoot - can your smart speaker...
Weekly poll results: Nokia X71 earns the fans' love Posted: 14 Apr 2019 01:00 AM PDT The Nokia X71 is a great mid-ranger - most people who voted in last week's poll agree. However, it's not perfect, it's certainly not going to challenge the Nokia 9 PureView as the top HMD phone. And since the X71 is expected to go global as the Nokia 8.1 Plus, some questions were raised if it is indeed better than the Nokia 8.1. The chipset is a downgrade, going from Snapdragon 710 to 660. You do get more RAM and storage as standard, though. The camera has also been called into question - the 48MP sensor has the resolution (and with binning, potentially larger pixels), but there's no...
AtmoTube Pro portable air quality monitor review Posted: 13 Apr 2019 09:00 PM PDT What is AtmoTube Pro? Originally conceived as an Indiegogo-funded product, the Atmotube's series of personal air pollution monitors give you insight on key air parameters in your immediate vicinity - Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), as well as Particulate Matter pollutants in sizes of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 micrometers. The gadget also monitors ambient temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure and can also serve as an altimeter. The temperature, humidity and pressure readings are interesting as well It connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth LE 5.0 and is equipped with...
This Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e commercial actually makes a pretty good case for a home tablet Posted: 13 Apr 2019 05:00 PM PDT Samsung just released a TV commercial for the new Galaxy Tab S5e and its hard to deny that it paints a really pretty image of having a "home tablet" device. Naturally, this comes as no surprise, since the utility of a capable, big-screen device around the house is pretty undeniable and self-evident. Still, Samsung's marketing team arguably did an excellent job at reminding us just why we liked the tablet form-factor, back when it was relevant. If there was ever a list of official "tablet pros", we are fairly certain the short clip would tick each and every one off. Clearly Samsung is...
| Here's the next batch of smartphones getting EMUI 9 update Posted: 13 Apr 2019 03:00 PM PDT Chinese phone maker Huawei recently announced Android Pie-based EMUI 9.1 beta for its Mate 20 lineup. But in addition to that, the company also announced the next batch of smartphones getting its latest custom skin. This batch consists of six smartphones which include the Honor 7X, Honor 9 Youth Edition, Honor 9i, Huawei Enjoy 7S, Huawei Enjoy 8 Plus, and Huawei Enjoy 9 Plus. | Microsoft Xbox One S All Digital leak shows a new disk-less console is on the way Posted: 13 Apr 2019 01:00 PM PDT The leak at hand is fairly substantial and the Microsoft Xbox One S All Digital does seem fairly straight-forward and self-explanatory of a device. At least on the surface that is. Promo materials, renders, as well as an alleged price point and release date have all surfaced online on what clearly looks to be an Xbox One S without a disk drive. Frankly, if the info wasn't quite as abundant we would have shrugged the whole thing off as a quick Photoshop joke. However, this step might just make some sense considering the current gaming climate and recent developments. But more on that in a... |
Here's what Samsung Galaxy A80 cases look like Posted: 13 Apr 2019 11:00 AM PDT Regardless of personal thoughts and sympathies towards notches, punch-holes, foldable panels or any of the other current solutions to expanding mobile phone screen real estate, we are undoubtedly amidst a rather cool and way overdue smartphone design "renaissance". But even though shiny new devices, like the Samsung Galaxy A80 might embody the experimental design spirit, they still rely heavily on the preferred "glass sandwich" styling of the day and thus require a certain level of care and protection to stay "mint". Understandably, designing cases for these devices is a whole new...
